The throw away rounds may also have to do with Mayweather's stamina in this fight. It was rumored he was sick all week with the flu.

    great post.

in the lead up to the fight i stated that cotto was the most intelligent and versatile fighter floyd would face. i thought cotto proved me right. in addition to that...i think pedro diaz had cotto sitting on the front foot like some cubans do...with that high guard, and that cost cotto late in the fight. i think had he used more headmovement he would have had more success.

it appears roach has him sitting on the back foot again using the headmovement. i'd be interested in seeing how a rematch would play out. of course mayweather has also switched his style some with his father back in his corner. i think it would still make for a great fight though...much better than floyd vs khan or maidana.

    This.

I should also add that there has always been segment of vocal Cotto fans who tend to over-romaticize all his exploits. This is why you read stuff like how 'competitive' the Trout fight (allegedly) was or all the 'success' Cotto was (allegedly) having against Mayweather, when the truth of the matter is that he won AT MOST 6-7 of the 24 rounds in those 2 fights.

If Cotto grabs that WBC MW title from Sergio, we may probably see Floyd vs Cotto II for that strap.

I think Cotto had a superb game plan, very good trainer, very good motivation plus Floyd's more aggressive style which made Cotto to have some succes and win some rounds.

The question is how a prime Pac or Khan would've done vs Floyd if both had the same game-plan as Cotto had vs Floyd ?! :think

I think the reason Cotto had success is because he made Floyd fight a fight he didn't want to fight. He wasn't afraid of getting hit.... therefore he pushed the pace and made Floyd throw record breaking numbers for a Floyd fight.

Mayweather threw 687 punches.... which is not normal for him. I think that is why Mayweather had to fight versus Cotto. I do not buy the theory that he wanted to give back to the fans lol.... Floyd doesn't like getting hit period... and it was a good fight that showed that Mayweather has a lot more arsenal in his tank... he just doesn't push himself to show it.

If you guys remember the sole reason why Cotto was having success was due to the way Floyd was fighting, out of his comfort zone. It was Roger that pushed Floyd to fight more aggressively, this was partially the reason why he elected to go back to Floyd Sr, as trainer.

The unfortunate truth for Cotto fans is, if Mayweather fought like his 'usual' self, he would have cruised to a unanimous decision with ease. Potshots and using the whole of the ring, do you really think a non-prime Cotto could walk down/cut off the ring against Mayweather? When was the last time you saw Mayweather constantly sitting on the ropes and getting tagged like that, objectively Mayweather is much faster and technically more skilled then Cotto, it was just the wrong plan.

If anything, for the first time it showed Mayweather not adapting and changing his style mid fight.

Finally, as much as I'm a Cotto fan I have Canelo beating him convincingly, younger, stronger and faster. And we all saw how Mayweather dealt with Canelo, with the his 'usual' style, a walk in the park...

Shut up with that bull**** man talking about he gave away two rounds , cotto had some success with it he also won 4 rounds against Floyd and made him miss often, at times jabbing May in the center of the ring two in a row at one point

A win is a win is a win... Just with your nonsense. Pac's style is more indusive to stoppage someone, Floyd's is about winning rounds.

A boxing fan understands that. You are blind with hate of Mayweather. sad fella you are...
