I don't like to take away from Busters victory because he fought a fight where you can clearly see he'd be a handfull for any HW in history.
That jab, the combos, the step back uppercut. Great performance.

There was a rematch clause, but Douglas reneged on it.

It is primarily Kings fault that the rematch didn’t happen.

Douglas was angry that King had tried to cheat him out of the title with the whole long count stunt, so he told King where to shove his contract, and signed to fight Holyfield instead.

Heard this, heard he also took a massive pay cut to fight Evander

I wonder how motivated Douglas would have been for Tyson II above Holyfield or if he would have been just as out of shape and ill prepared

how does that work?.. when he refuses a rematch after agreeing in the contract?

i thought holyfield was waiting in line and had to be next man to fight for the title, so i presumed (guessed) it was him not taking step aside money or something.

Exactly, Holyfield had a contract to fight the winner of Tyson/Douglas on June 16th 1990. The fight was delayed, but Douglas was contractually obliged to fight Holyfield, hence DKP's desperate attempts to get the result of Douglas/Tyson overturned.

    There was no rematch because
    a) Team Tyson never put it in the contract, they never thought theyd need one against a guy like Douglas
    b) Douglas was contracted to fight Holyfield, who was next in line for the title shot.
    c) Douglas gets Kod by Holyfield and then retires, thus ruining Tysons chance at redemption
    d) Douglas was meant to fight Tyson in '99, but was Kod by Savarese instead and Tyson then kod Savarese in about 30 seconds.

Had the rematch happened in 90-91, i beleve Tyson would wipe the floor with Douglas.

Douglas more than likely would have turned up in his regular shape i.e the Holyfield fight, and Tyson more than likely would have turned up like he did for Ruddock. Ready for war.

Don't blame Douglas for taking the Holyfield fight, he rightly was pissed at that pos King, and Holyfield was long overdue for a title shot.
Tyson was, KO'D so he had to get back in line, he had his chance to get his title back before he went to the slammer, but pulled out of the fight, so Holyfield fought Bert Cooper..

In a rematch I doubt Douglas would repeat his performance, this was the fight that saw Douglas show what could have been and how deep his immense talent really was. It also showed the world that Douglas had not been motivated his whole career. Tyson was obviously not well prepared for the fight he looked soft and even smiled when in the ring prior to the fight the intensity was not there. In a rematch what should have happened would have happened.

Had Douglas fought anyone on that particular night and I mean anyone in history he could have won for one night he was the best. Before and after he was same old Buster.

    As he should've.

With that said Tyson would have won a rematch.

Actually Douglas got a mega purse of $22 MILLION to fight Evander at the Mirage, Steve Wynn was making his move to take control of boxing in Vegas hoping to displace Arum & King & throwing out shed loads of $$$$$. King made sure he had options on Douglas & Buster even had to pay KING $4 MILLION possibly $6 MILLION for the fight with Evander to go ahead. The only way for Buster to be free of KING was not to get up off the floor in the 3rd round by doing his Jack Johnson imitation.
