Styles make fights (along with several other attributes, but for the sake of simplicity let's go with the old "SMF") - and Broner did ultimately get whooped by a former career 140lber in Maidana, don't forget. How many welterweights are more dangerous - specifically to Broner - in terms of styles and overall attributes - than Matthysse and Garcia? :think

    Keith Thurman for one.

    Manny??

Broner was calling out BOTH Maythysse AND Maidana.

Don't tell me your memory is that shot to hell.

Oh, I'm sorry. Did he make his welterweight debut against Thurman? :huh

...or was it Malignaggi, seen as if not the weakest titlist going then up there?

There was no easier pickings at 140 than Malignaggi was, or at least was perceived to be as of early last year when Broner moved up. Don't even start with any backtalk on that point, either, claiming how jumping up to challenge Malignaggi was some bold and risky move. Hindsight is 20/20, and Malignaggi giving Broner hell and then beating Judah both came as big surprises.

The champs at 140 as of then were as follows:

    WBA regular - Allakhverdiev
WBA Super - Garcia (also WBC regular)
    WBC interim - Matthysse
    WBO - Alvarado
    IBF - Peterson

Don't even front like anybody one year ago would've uttered a peep about Malignaggi being less of a sitting duck than any of those.

Calling them out with no realistic chance of ever meeting them as he bypassed their division altogether? That's funny.

Because the division was to strong. He picked the weakest champ at 147 instead.

The big boys at 140lb maul him.

    :good

Maidana himself is a light welterweight, certainly no larger-bodied than Matthysse or Garcia (or Peterson, Alvarado, or Allakhverdiev, really - all of whom could and probably will eventually move up to welter and be no more 'blown-up' than he is) and mauled him.

I have no problem with Malinaggi as his first opponent at WW.

Broner only has TWO fights at 135 and ZERO at 140....only a FOOL would criticize his decision to fight Malinaggi.

Last year Broner was a LW.

Don't front like you don't remember Broner calling out Maidana AND Mathysse.

Broner doesn't have any fights at 140 and only 2 at 135

How many fights at 130 does Maidana(or anybody else at 140 or 147) have???

Maidana mauled him sure..but he couldn't keep him down and looked in trouble a few times himself.

    Broner is one tough mofo.

I can't think of too many guys that could have taken those shots...especially to the body.

Doesn't matter. He would have got beat at 140 also. At least he has the excuse of going up 2 weight divisions for his loss to Maidana.

    Fu.ck is wrong with you..

How do you duck guys by jumping OVER them??????

If Broner were scared he would have stayed at 135 and ate properly:deal

Signing on to box Maidana tells me he wasn't afraid.
The simple answer seems to be that not only did he have personal issues with Malignaggi, he saw a low risk way to move up and immediately win a title.

    There it is.

    He fought Malinaggi..

At least he didn't fight Golden Johnson or Alphonso Gomez..

Those are the type of guys MOST fighters use to test the waters in a new division.
