How does your boxing gym work?

    As in, is it more of a come in at your time, do your own thing or is it a class type of thing where everyone follows the routine assigned by a coach?

    My gym is more of a do your own thing. I don't know if that's how it is with other gyms so I was just wondering.

    I would prefer to be under a schedule cause I don't know if I'm setting up my technique training and conditioning properly. Plus I would want to do hands on drills with partners instead of just the usual shadowboxing, bag work, sparring.

    We have classes for beginners and people who just want a workout, but most of the boxers come in and do their own thing, spar, work with coaches doing pads etc.

    It used to be a 'come in and do your own thing' which suited me to a tee, as i prefer to just do skipping and plenty of work on the bag.

    But now one of the blokes who trained with us, who has dabbled in everything you can do in the sport, has taken it upon himself to be the unoffical 'coach' (just another string to this muppets bow) and he does classes there which include everything, which isn't my cup of tea because i'm not paying £3 to run around the area where the club is based, when i can do that in my own time and for FREE.

    I just like to do about 10 rounds of skipping and a solid hour/hour and a half of bag work.

    Stopped using that gym now.

  5. mine was very regimented until the end of a session , the gym i used wasnt the best by any means though

    I help at an amateur gym but if it was up to me i'd make a indivdual program for every fighter. lot of the kids are just wasting their time getting bored.

    Scheduled leveled classes.

    Open gym first come first serve during operating hours. Never a problem because fight gyms have bar none the nicest people you have ever met in them.

    The classes aren't split?

    Intro (stance, footwork, slow jab, some drills)
    Intermediate (drills, controlled sparing)
    Advanced 1 (faster drills, sparring with coach critique)
    Advanced 2 (open spar)

    If there is just ONE class? I wouldn't be surprised if that didn't sink the gym after while with all of the attrition. Good luck man!

    The gym I go to now is a "do your own thang" type of deal, but I have a trainer since he sees potential in me. He puts me through these calisthenics which are torture, but they do work their magic. Some pet peeves of mine with that gym is I have yet to get match there in my year with them. The coaches almost never being there except when they work their favorites, leaving some guys completely unattended despite promises, and the gym being closed at random intervals due to the lazy nature of the owners. Completely unprofessional.

    The new boxing club I will be attending is much different. All the members there do basic warmup calisthenics together, then kind of do their own thing from there on out. Lots of bag work and shadowboxing going on, as well as an awful lot of mittwork and at the end of the night the advanced get to spar a few. No unprofessional ism, despite the trainers working for no pay and a much better environment.

    I'd come in and the coach would run us through a specified strength/conditioning workout. He is a fitness trainer on the side and has a degree in nutrition, he couldn't turn pro so he branched out for opportunities in gyms. But he's first and foremost a boxing coach. Anyways, the 3-6 of us that would come in at one scheduled time would run through a circuit workout, he switched it up different days, then had us do specific drills and do rounds on the bag, with mitts or the slip rope mixed in between rounds. Sometimes we'd end with an ab workout or some weights.

    When there weren't a lot of us on the fight team there at once we'd just do our own thing, but if we were together he'd take advantage and have us do drills and use each other as a motivator.

    According to me that gym work is the best source for boxing so i am agree with your all reviews about it.According to me that boxing gym work is best work for get good strength and physically activeness.Boxing is the best source for mentally and physically activeness.

    Mostly it was everybody did conditioning exercises and the coaches would kind of rotate everybody around for individual instruction on technique or double instruction if two guys were sparring at the same time.

    2 weekdays - conditioning & sparring
    1 weekend - conditioning & sparring
    All other days are DIY

    This is exactly how I like it. You need at least a couple of days where guys are expected to show up and do regimented work. People work harder that way. Otherwise, guys just tend to get lazy with the DIY stuff. Doing stuff that they always do, not developing new skills, not pushing hard enough.

    at our gym if you want a trainer you can have one but you work out your schedule with him, most guys who are serious about fighting have 1 on 1 instruction everyday... my trainer for instance works with me the whole time i am there, training to become a pro tho so it might be different for those who just want to get in shape

    there are actual boxing classes at mine, but being one of the more seasoned guys i come in and do my own thing. the one coach tho will run the beginner class kinda thing, while the other guy handles the sparring and works with the fighters. call me a snob, but one coach has you spar every day you're in the gym which i do not agree with, and most of the sparring is unsafe (no headgear, sometimes no mouthguard, bag gloves, huge weight differences, too hard all the time, etc). i need to be mentally prepared to spar, its not something i can do every day, i lose motivation and interest doing it that much and its not safe. so i drill at home by myself quite a bit then come in to spar and hit pads once or twice a week. works for now until i can get into a better gym
