I really like all Durans excuses!. My favorite was the steak he ate the day before was too hot! Its interesting that it bothers Leonard more than it bothers Roberto but it was great at the end seeing them together again! Leonard is just gonna have to find a way to deal with it. Kinda like Hearns came to terms with a draw years ago!
Right Southpaw ! Great look back at the build up to the fights. Those were truly the days... The best actually fought the best. We saw a lot of great fights back then... Cool to see them as they are now too !

Same here. He wanted a quick rematch but it wasn't anything unusual (e.g. the same year Minter rematched Antuofermo in far less time) but Leonard turned it into some sort of 'strategy' thing years later based on stories that came out since the quit job. A bit like Ange Dundee and the 'cut glove' in 1963. Leonard just wants to big himself up about everything, his ego is that large, that's why he so often makes himself look a twat. In reality, Duran had 3 months to train- the fight was pencilled in in August for end of November. Roberto was happy with the date at the time...cash in the bank and enough time to get in shape. If he chose not to, tough ****. He could have asked for the fight to be moved back...faked an injury or something.
I agree. It was a combination of the clowning and the fact Duran wasn't fit enough to do anything about it that made him quit. Both camps knew Duran wasn't in his best condition. To be honest even Montreal Duran would have struggled to beat that version of Leonard. Duran was the better fighter p4p though.
Duran is at peace with his boxing career the good and the bad. He redeemed himself from No Mas. Leonard is an empty shell of a person starving for attention. Sad. RL should be satisfied with his boxing achievements but this show reminds me why I didn't like Ray Leonard.
I very much agree. I've always felt that whether it was 5 months or 15, Duran would have been leaving things to the last minute before really buckling down and getting into shape. I honestly don't think he anticipated that Leonard would be tougher to beat the second time around; to the contrary actually. He was partying hard in NY when he should have been training. In the documentary, just as he is about to return to the corner after meeting at center ring for the referee's instructions, you can see him shooting a look at Leonard that was pure arrogance, almost contempt. In my opinion, he was dead confident (and as it turns out, probably too confident) that he would beat him again.
I got the same impression watching the documentary. Duran really seems carefree and content with his lot in life. Ray is still brooding and psychoanalysing everything.
good thing Duran didnt begrudge giving rematches like someone I know did anyone notice how Leonard quits after every tussle? I didnt even realize he had retired between fights its not as tho he had been badly beaten and only 24 yrs what a quitter same thing in the Howard & Norris fights, quit just becuz he failed to make a ****** out of Howard and retired when Norris made a ****** of him

Perfect. Leonard is really a disturbed attention *****. I don't think Duran even has a solid answer mfor why he quit. I think he was just drained and got his ass whipped and was losing badly and needed a way out. A prideful guy like Duran won't evenet his mind go there... What a pompous ass Leonard is... By the way, 9:30ish I loved Duran's Mickey Mouse cap. And WTF is up with Michael Marley's gay pink hat? It looks like he's wearing his daughter's hat... He didn't pull that off well at all.....
If you watch that last two rounds of the rematch you can see Duran dragging his punches. It had nothing to do with Duran being made to chase, Duran was dragging his punches even when Leonard was right in front of him. I think right there Duran knew he was in deep **** not being in the proper shape to beat an elite. I personally dislike Leonard to this day and his quote in the "no mas documentary pretty much is the reason......... Duran say's "Why did he wait so long to grant me a rematch?" Leonards response, "Because I could!" That pretty much sums up Leonard and the reason why alot of people beside me have an immense dislike of him.
