Both guys were very tense... Watson shoulder-twitching and Eubank fist-pumping. Watson was aiming for the body but Eubank was skipping in and out, and Watson threw a lot of jabs that continually missed marginally due to Eubank's defensive radar/subtle head reactions. I had Eubank edging four of the first five with his impeccable ring generalship, some lightning shots and impressive counters; Watson doing quite well in the 3rd. Michael then landed about half a dozen hard right hands in the 6th, having finally got his range and timing down on the awkward trickster. Only for Eubank to come out in the next round and make a point of waiting for the straight blows to slip by a centimetre with a cheekly-looking poker-face! 4-2-1 Eubank going into the 8th, in which Chris started very sharply on the offensive in contrast to the previous three-minute session, though it was the second even round in a row as he soon tired. The 9th was a clear Eubank stanza, stunning Watson with timed/placed singles - the round in which he predicted he would KO Watson. The 10th saw Eubank shaken up severely via a left to the body, combined with clear exhaustion/dehydration (he nearly killed himself to make weight). Watson plodded those final three rounds instead of closing them out convincingly and DIDN'T deserve a rematch (he only got one because of the public outcry). Eubank was clearly there for the taking in the last three rounds but out-sharped Mike in the 11th, sealing the win. 6-4-2 Eubank. I guess that's 116-114.
I scored it for Watson, though not by the avalanche that a lot had it at the time. Very close one which Michael edged on workrate.
Watson clearly for me. I used to be a Eubank fanboy and score it for him but Watson clearly outlanded him in the majority of rounds.
One thing Watson didn't do was land many punches. What he did do was plod forward, keep Eubank busy with the left hand (not landing), try for the body (mostly blocked or dodged), keep his shoulders moving to try to impress the judges, cover up occasionally to block (often Eubank slipped shots in), and land a few right hands in the 3rd and 6th, and a hurtful left to the body in the 10th. That's about it! Eubank was there for the taking because of the weight-making!
Close fight, you could easily make Watson a winner, like many people did. Just like they made Amaral, Schommer, Thornton, Close, Sherry, etc, winners' when they fought Eubanks. A real 'who's who' of 90s boxing there.
We'll give you Schommer, mate, and Benn at Old Trafford. The rest - clear, comfortable Eubank wins to the non-demented.
Benn too, yes, all controversial. That's why Eubank has never been anywhere near the IBHOF, why would he? Defending a paper title and being hugely unimpressive in doing so simply won't cut it with anyone who has an idea.
Nelson Mandela did! Ouch http://www.thecourier.co.uk/sport/b...y-man-in-1993-who-liked-chris-eubank-1.163431
Ok then so that's now three people that I can think Mandela who I can forgive, Harry Gibbs, one of Eubanks judges and yourself obviously. Also Barry McGuigan agreed it was a draw, but then he said the Whitaker-Chavez "draw" was a fair result so that just shows you how incompetent his judging is.
