I've been threatening to watch this fight again for ages but can't bring myself to it, because, like last time, I will demand that hour of my life back (and it won't be returned). So the only solution is to wait until the clocks go back in October.

Poor decision though last time I watched it (and that was during an Ali Wankfest stage about 20-odd years ago)....

    Pathetic scoring,

    Tom Kelly,,,,,,,,E,A,A,A,A,,,A,A,A,A,A,,,Y,A,Y,Y,E,,,,= 10-3-2
    Terry Moore,,,,Y,A,A,A,A,,,A,A,A,A,A,,,Y,A,A,Y,Y,,,,= 11-4-0
    Larry Barrett,,,E,A,E,A,A,..A.A,A,A,E,,,,Y,A,Y,Y,Y,,,,= 7-4-3

All '3' clowns scored Round 9 for Ali,,,,,,,just pathetic,,,,,,,

After 8 Rounds, even Howard Cosell stated, this fight is too close to call.
Young is brilliant in his defensive-skills and counter-punching.

During Round 9, Cosell mentions that Jimmy Young is Rated #3 by Ring Magazine, and recently made Ron Lyle look foolish.
Clearly Round 9 is Jimmy Young's, as he lands the best punch of the fight, a solid
counter-right that snaps Ali's head back, as well as numerous sharp left jabs.
Ali dances like a 'clumsy bear' flicking out harmless soft jabs.
    Missing in nearly every attempt.
Ali starts dancing and does an Ali-shuffle, realizing that he can only win the round by
    acting like he's in control.
The Judges buy it, but the boxing public didn't.

Ali almost falls on his face, after he attempts a lead straight right. that Young easily
    avoids.
At the end of the Round 9, Jimmy Young laughs......The crowd cheers him.
IMO,,,,,,,that round won by Jimmy, made the fight even.

Yes. Yes.. Yes... STILL! Even after 15 rds of public sparring and jiving, Jimmy Young was unable to convicne the judges or certain members of the general public that he could clearly beat a 34 year old Ali who was 230 pounds and obviously not at his best in April 1976...

Had Ali been well trained like he was in Manila against Frazier back in '75 or at least conditioned like he was for Norton later in Sept. '76 at Yankee stadium, Ali would've decisively schooled Jimmy Young even though he was faded after age 32... IMO, 1974 was the end of Ali's true boxing prime...

Young fought like a sparring partner. Ali won AND SO DID GEORGE. I can't stand that fighting style. Bull****. Young fought to survive only.

Well I have to disagree and I'm no fan of Young but Ali missed so much and got hit with the far more cleaner punches. Terrible fight for Ali. The Foreman fight was close he got gassed out again and was hurt in final round. Close fight. Young was very crafty, he may have been boring and defensive by nature but he was hard to get out there.

    Embarrassing Worse Fix Ever.

I watched this for the 1st time last night,im still like :huh, anyone who has a case for ali winning this lets hear it.
Jose Napoles vs Armando Muniz was top of my worse fix/robbery/decision list not anymore.Ali punched air alllllll night, after 5 rounds he didnt land a punch, yet Cosell after 8 said ''this is a very close fight indeed'':-(.

Jimmy Young made ali become the aggressor for a change something he's not used to and it showed, ali's lead right was non existent he just could not solve Mr young who was in a different class throughout countering with ease

Cosell and the Ali fans who had this close can **** right off

Jimmy Young. Uncrowned heavyweight champion. Wish I could see the second Shavers fight. His record could easily have included wins against Shavers, Ali, Norton, Dokes, Occassio, to go along with the Foreman and Lyle2x wins

This was the most blatant gift Ali received during the time. The Shavers fight could have gone either way and Ali at least made the third fight with Norton close towards the end, but his performance in this fight was abysmal.

I have seen far worse decisions than the one involving the world heavyweight championship bout between Muhammad Ali and Jimmy Young, but I think the scoring by the ring officials in the bout was absolutely terrible and too lopsided in favor of Ali. I remember one round in which Ali simply held his hands up to block punches while Young was throwing punches, but at least one official scored the round an even one.

Ali deserved the decision, although its ultimately taste and what you attribute value to in scoring. It actually reminded me a bit of Valuev Holyfield. Both winners deserved it despite the controversy, both times, the bigger men were the more aggressive, landed the harder shots, and while they got hit slightly more than they hit, it was quite clear their opponents punches didn't effect them at all.

I haven't trawled through the whole thread, but why did Ali use that bizarre style for the first few rounds? What was the reasoning behind it?

I was a big Ali fan back in the 70's but I had to admit to myself that Young won that fight. Ali was in terrible shape and landed nothing of any consequence the whole fight. Ali was at his best when an opponent chased him and tried to land a big shot. Against Young, Ali was forced into being the aggressor and it didn't work well for him as Young was very good at counterpunching while slipping big shots. As a well respected champion and an ATG Ali should've trained for the fight and showed the title more respect. late in his career he believed that all he had to do was show up and fall back on his name and reputation to see him through. He got away with it here.

That tactics of Young cost him the fight. You don't stick your head outside the ropes, clinch and etc. Ali, landed the more meaningful punches and he was never hurt by Young. Young was stunned by a few Ali punches in the fight.
