Ali triumphs to become HW Champion 3 times as an underdog. How did he do it?

Where did you read that Muhammad was a 49-1 underdog for the Foreman fight ?????????? :huh As has been commented in earlier posts on this thread,Ali was a 3 - 1 underdog for that one. His victory was quite a shock but not an earth shattering one such as Douglas-Tyson.

In spite of Muhammad's loss to Spinks in their first bout,he was still the betting favourite for the rematch as most knew that all he had to do to win was arrive in better shape than previously.

Jowcol brings up an interesting point about Ali tanking the Spinks fight to get a rematch in order to win the title for a then-unprecedented third time. For what it's worth, my father always believed the same thing and I've seen others backing this theory as well.

As for the other two, well he beat a powerful but aging champ who was no match for his speed, and in the other he beat a powerful but one-dimensional champ who was no match for his guile.
Sound a hell of a lot easier than it was obviously, especially the Foreman fight.

    Ali-Foreman betting odds

    3-1 according SI

    4-1 NY times

    Also lists 7-1 on Liston

These 40+ odd underdog myths seem to orignate from this weird UK article. The writer is clearly confused or nuts, the analogy to Calzaghe/Kessler doesn't even make sense.

I guess thats where I should have looked Mongoose! Wikapedia, The ring and other boxing sights arent as reliable as I thought. Thankyou for links I really enjoyed reading up on the SI article. Theres another Fight forum (Sherdog) where most of the people there tried convincing me to denounce SI and The Ring. One article on there had the odds even higher than I did. So basically that Forum is a joke.

Ali was still a considerable betting underdog, just not Douglas/Tyson level, that would have been nuts.

Cripes, I never knew the odds were that lopsided for Wlad-Sanders. I'll never forget going over to my old man's place to watch the fight, telling him as Sanders was walking to the ring that he has NO chance against Wlad, none whatsoever, and that it would be a one-sided slaughter.

I've never been so wrong and right at the same time. :D

Yeah, 3-1 was the odds most bandied around for the Rumble. The weekend of the fight- Vegas odds 14-5; London 11-5.

I've posted this before, but it's always a good read. Of the 5 previews in Boxing News, three writers went for Ali:
