Joe Calzaghe moved up and fought the light HW champion - why can't Andre Ward?

I remember when Joe Calzaghe was 168 champion, after he had accomplished everything there was to accomplish in that division, he moved up and fought the Ring light heavyweight champion, in that fighter's home country.

Why can't Andre Ward go up to light heavyweight and try to become a two-division champ?

The good news is Ward still has almost 6 years to do what zags did in the same amount of time. Ain't that something? :yep

Ward has Groves, Froch rematch potentially and Golovkin potentially. Likewise LHW has not been decided yet - the winner of Stevenson/Kovalev will be the LHW champ and that will take us through 2014.

Expect Ward in 2015 to have a run at the LHW champ.

Exactly....and it still be in less time than it took Calzaghe to move up and fight an old man and almost lose.

Joe Calzaghe moved up when he was what 37???
Ward is only 29 WTF (KO'ed the LHW champ you really think the weight mattered?)

He is just waiting on guys like GGG, Chavez, Froch, Groves to fight him.

Let Stevenson and Kovalev fight before Ward moves up so we can say that 1 guy is the guy to beat.

SOB Ward does not have to move up to fight Stevenson as Stevenson said he would fight Ward at 175 or 168, but Ward is still afraid to fight Stevenson. Stevenson called out Ward live on HBO, Ward cowered.............Ward will only fight in his home town with his personal referee, judges, boxing commission, commentators, have has to have everything. I have never seen anything like it...........

...an old man that was king of the Light Heavyweight division, #4 P4P, widely regarded as one of the greatest in that divisions history and one of the all time great boxers period, who went on to badly embarrass the dominant Middleweight champion and reign over the Light Heavyweight division for a futher two years after Calzaghe's retirement and is still beating world level opposition today at almost 49 years of age.

You act as if Bernard Hopkins was just some old guy and not Bernard Hopkins. Are we supposed to be surprised that Calzaghe struggled against a elite level fighter who's a bad style-match up for him anyway and that Hopkins could hold his own at the highest level during his prime Light Heavyweight years? (meaning the years he was at his best at the weight - 2006 to 2010 - not when his body was in prime condition.)

MAJR I respect your opinions, I really do. But calling Hopkins one of the best in 175 history is just far fetched. With all due respect I'd suggest you point fingers at the TS for starting an obvious troll thread if you don't like what you've read.

calzghe knew hops would always outbox him easily but he knew at 42 he could be outgassed.

    ALL 40somethings can be outgassed.
