Well, a specific fighter can get attention to the sport, and then they can become fans of other fighters, and the sport itself. This is probably how most people become fans of the sport, including fighters like SRL(whom idolized Ali), and Ali(whom idolized SRR). See a fighter they like and or identify with.

As a fan of Mayweather, I want to see him continue to live up to his greatness, and taking on the best challenges. Not trying to make the Pacquiao fight is inexcusable. At the end of his career, he will unfortunately have a big asterisk next to his name without the Pacquaio fight.

The problem with most fans is that they are so blinded by their opinion of a fighter, that they fail to see a fighters shortcomings. Likewise fans that hate certain fighters fail to identify the greatness in the fighter they hate.

 

Obviously nobody "needs" to be a fan of the sport, or any other sport for that matter. You're talking nonsense. :bart
