Ricky hatton without doubt has been the most exciting british fighter in the last 20 years. Everytime he fought it was pure entertainment from his press conferences to the ring walks and then to the all action fight he always delivered. Im not saying he is the best british fighter in the last 20 years but the boy was class and no other fighter since has captured the british publics attention quite like the hitman He has a great resume and only lost to one of the all time greats and pacman who at the time was at his very peak and at that point in his career pacman would have beaten most fighters of any era at that weight I can't see us getting another hatton for a long long time
Great guy, great fighter. We won't see his like for along time. 100% agree with your post, he lost too the two p4p fighters of his generation, massive props for stepping up.
yeah, he did seem to bring a huge crowd which made for a great event every time he fought. non stop action will get the punters in.
A blend of the 'everyman, average joe' personality and sustained aggression and pressure made him so popular.
No not really. Fought and built his career on not so great fighters, failed at top level. Never been the same since, couldnt hack being exposed, great fighters go on and on, and live a clean life then get out. not give up because they have a few quid in the bank. Never mind he fought PBF and PAC in there primes, and came up short, was not ricky in his? PBF is still going strong, pac also. Where is Ricky, still recovering from one pint too many let alone one punch. He made his money and fooled the fans, and got out, cant knock him for mugging people off though. No wonder he has self demons, about what he could have been. Sorry but that is my opinion.
Yeah Hatton fights were like nothing else, i mean even bit fights now like Haye vs Klitschko or Froch vs Groves just don't get close to the buzz of a Hatton fight, his fans were some of the best ever his fights were very entertaining also, I mean i remember when he fought Mayweather it was headline news on every station BBC, Sky News not sky sports everyone and i mean everyone was talking about it i knew of about 10 different fight parties that weekend just amazing really. I have never loved a build up to a fight more then Hatton vs Floyd, still the best 24/7 All Access type shows their personalities were so well matched. Won't see another Hatton for a very very long time maybe not even ever again in terms of British boxers and their popularity.
Ricky Hatton managed something very very few boxers do, he forged a genuine connection with the British public and he was adored by all. The boxing analyst will call him "over-rated", the boxing fan will call him a "champion". I sincerely miss Ricky Hatton in boxing I honestly do, as a huge fan of his I'm kind of glad he's not around now, 140 and 147 is ridiculously strong, he would have had his hands full even at his peak (2005). Great fighter IMHO, I suppose in a funny way he was the Oscar De La Hoya of British boxing (I don't mean that literally). Long live the Hitman, great memories!
Respect Hatton but in no way is he as you say the most exciting british fighter of the last 20 years. Say what you like about Khan but his fights really are exciting. Haye (admitedly mainly cruiser) Naz is an obvious one Benn all these and more were more exciting than the excellent Hatton. No dig just saying I don't agree.
Hatton always good to watch just behind Benn in the excitement stakes for me in recent british boxing history. One thing I doubt we will see a british fighter take anything close to the numbers he had following him overseas out on his own on that.
Summed it up about perfectly, everything a fighter should be in my eyes, certainly one of my favorite all time fighters. A true great both for and of British boxing.
I don't think he was found out at world level because I would call malinaggi, tsyzu, Castillo, collazo all world class fighters, ok tsyzu was not at his peak but Floyd and pacman are above world level they are two of the greatest fighters of all time, hattons performance against mayweather looks better and better with the ease mayweather is still beating opponents. I totally agree as a boxer he should of done things a bit differentely outside the ring but I think that's half the reason the british public liked him, he was who he was and imo had a amazing career
