I'd be curious to see what the final odds were. Early round KO bets are always significantly higher than the final line, which is what it looks like this is quoting.

 

Liston was never more than a 10/1 underdog in Clay I.

Ali was between 3/1 and 6/1 underdog in Zaire.

In Spinks vs. Ali II, despite being the champion, Spinks was a 5/1 underdog to retain.

Buster was 41/1 outright to beat Tyson. That means for him to knock Tyson out early would've been in the neighborhood of 200/1 or something.

For a Sanders early KO of Wladimir to be 50/1, the actual odds for Sanders outright would have been proportionately much lower. That is how that works.

 

Ali was mentally tough, and he had Dundee, who did not allow him to quit in the first Liston fight when his eyes were blinded by some foreign substance.

I think the venue and Foreman's cut which delayed the Rumble in the Jungle heavily favored Ali, but the rope a dope strategy was Ali's.
