ShoBox: Ivan Redkach vs. Tony Luis & John Thompson vs. Frank Galarza RBR

I just want to point out that Loco Hernandez, who dealt Luis his one loss, is despite the unglamorous record no bum.

Luis was hardly the first prospect he upset or troubled. (he drew with Mickey Bey Jr. and ran both Luis Ramos and Michael Perez close)

 

Round 5

Redkach is getting pushed up to the ropes and hit with body shots. Luis is ducking under the slow right hook of Redkach and muscling him backward. Overhand rights by Luis, missing or grazing as Redkach hunkers down in retreat. Redkach shoves Luis into the ropes. The ref warns Luis for leading with his head coming in low. 1-2 by Redkach, blocked and countered with a high left jab by Luis.

Barry Tompkins has it 48-46 to Luis, seeing him sweep the last four.

Farhood has Redkach slightly ahead.

 

Round 6

Redkach hurts Luis with a left uppercut! Right hook stepping out into full extension range! Luis is curling up and bending forward into Redkach to lean on him. Redkach tries pushing him off to flurry. Head clash, nasty cut on Luis at the hairline. Redkach lands a left hand lead, just where the cut is. They press together and need to be split up by the ref. Over and over they press together without punching, clinging until broken. Left hand by Luis! Redkach stunned, holding Luis in a headlock and pushing down on him! Luis shoves Redkach into a corner, strong-arming him with both arms outstretched and pushing up off his toes with powerful hooks. Redkach is slapping with the right with his back on the ropes. The ref splits them and resets them in the middle of the ring. Long right jab by Redkach, chin exposed in the air as Luis leaps in and plants a 1-2 on it.

Raul Marquez and Barry Tompkins both have it 57-56 to Luis.

 

Round 7

Redkach is steamrolled into the ropes as Luis buries his chin in his chest, ramming his arms into Redkach's. Luis is diving under the right jab of Redkach and planting left jabs on his stomach, firing double right crosses up top. Redkach is laying back on the ropes, making Luis jump in on him and prompting a head-leaning warning from the ref. Straight left by Redkach. Luis is leaning on Redkach in the corner. Body shot by Redkach. Clinch. Break. Long 1-2 by Redkach, missing, but drawing a counter left hook from Luis which Redkach in turn counters with a step-back right hook.

You do know that Sam Vargas got his ass kicked from pillar to post a couple of weeks ago, right? Not quite the A-list prospect he looked early on...

While I didn't give him the 7th, his sustained effort has been admirable especially considering he is the underdog here and fighting outside his normal style...and factoring in the adversity of the cut and the knockdown.
