He was a terrific fighter with flair and appeal to the casual fan..... But in all honesty he's biggest scalp was a over the hill Kostya. However that's not Ricky's fault he was an underdog in that fight don't forget. He's only two loses are P4P champs ( not including the comeback fight of course)
His talking of himself in the third person? His 10 year of excuses for not fighting Junior Witter? His trainer taking him to court to get paid? "Man of the people"
Junior witter wouldn't of lasted 5 rounds at hatton's peak, if he got in the ring with mayweather and pacman do you really think he was worried about witter?? He didn't fight him because it was pointless
just a shame your hero did not prove at as he stated he would on live tv , as for pac may why would he duck witter because hatton knew witter would of beat him thus not getting them fights ask your self one thing where is wickys british title :huh
That's not true. He had peaked weeks earlier and knew he had nic chance to win the fight. He wanted to call the fight off but the volume of traveling fans wouldn't allow it
Exactly. Wicky claimed the Witter fight had been written into his contract. Does anyone believe he was telling the truth? Witter called him out on live Tv in 2000 - the Mayweather fight was over 7 years after. He fought some poor opposition up to the Tsyzu fight in 2006. He then said he wouldn't fight Witter until he had a world title. His last excuse was that he wouldn't fight Witter because he shook his hand at the BBC sports personality award and Witter said "one day".
Miss his fights so bad! The only fighter i remember that used to get me totally nervous when he was fighting. As someone stated above...everything you'd want in a fighter, gave it everything he had, even when the pac-man stretched him, he went out all guns blazing. Fought and beat some good fighters along the way and on the whole had an amazing career, give me it over calzaghe's any day of the week. I actually though f warr-en done a fantastic job of managing hatton's career, apart from wasting some fights before the tyszu one, the wbu run went on a bit too long. But the timing of most of the fights were perfect imo, good seasoned pro's coming to the end of there career, perfect foil for an good upcoming fighter as hatton was. Also i see it a lot, people saying he was popular because he got the man city fans, football fans behind him as if they only choose to get behind him because of his lifestyle or him claiming he supported them or whatever, that helped yeah , but there was more too it than that he earned it the hard way in the ring, he was very very entertaining in them early days which bottomed out a bit when he got into deeper waters against the top guys in the division. Which is to be expected. Witter discussion just stupid imo, witter was a spoiler. He went on too have a decent career himself, but there was a reason he was avoided by most, his style spoiled fights it's as simple as that, in an entertainment business thats a problem.
Do miss the Hatton fights. Went to a few of them, the atmosphere was always electric. 9 times out of 10 he always gave you your moneys worth from a performance perspective. Loved the way he'd cut the ring off, dart inside, change the angles and whip the body shots in. People can say what they want about the fights Hatton fought, but at the end of the day I think he put together a very solid record. His own words were that he wouldn't change his WBU days for the world, as that's where he served his boxing apprenticeship and basically how he prepared himself to fight the bigger names and on the bigger stages. Those fights with the likes of Magee, Tackie, Phillips and Oliveira really stood him in good stead and definitely improved him as a fighter so that when he did step up, he was more than ready. He fought Tsyzu, Mayweather and Pacquaio... all of whom were considered the best in the world at the time - all pound for pound top 3 fighters when he fought them. Malignaggi was another good win. He beat him in 2008, 5 years later and Malignaggi is still fighting named opponents and putting in solid performances. Many thought he deserved the nod against Broner. I was at his comeback fight against Senchenko. Great atmosphere and although the out come wasn't what 99.9% of the arena wanted - at least Hatton didn't come back and fight no hopers in 6 rounders, he came back against a former world champion because he wanted to see if he what he once had was still there. He found out it wasn't, he found out what he needed to know and now I believe he's buried much of the demons that haunted his head for a good few years. Good luck to him.
There was no way he was ever going to give Witter a shot who had a more than respectable career. He brang nothing to the table £ wise at the box office for Hatton high risk little reward. Hatton's people knew it.....but you know what so did the Ingle team they knew however they tried to rile Hatton he wasn't going to give Witter a great opportunity or payday!
I don't think its enough just to fight p4p greats, although it certainly was brave to fight floyd & pacman. You also have to be judged on the performance as well, otherwise I could fight floyd tomorrow he could KO me in 10 secs does that mean Ive had a great career. Not doggin him but he he came up miles short in those fights, did slightly better in the floyd fight, but the pacman fight was awful.
Hattons performance against Floyd gets better everytime Floyd wins with such ease at least hatton gave him something to think about in the first half of the fight, pacman fight I think he over trained but the outcome would of been the same, many a world class fighter has come up short against them, at the time they were in a league of there own, Floyd still is!
Always get disappointed when people compare hatton getting ko'd against mayweather against a lot of guys going the distance. That was ricky's style, thats the reason he had the fan base that he had. That was a good performance against floyd, he's went in there and went for it and in the end came up short against an elite fighter, no shame there. Cant be ****ed watching guys go in give it a go for 2 or 3 rounds find out it's a lot harder than it looks then give up and coast to the scorecards. I actually think this along with the tyzsu fight showed that ricky belonged around that level. He wasn't on floyd's level but he also wasn't miles behind either and certainly not a club fighter as some are led to believe. The one big regret of hattons career for me was getting rid of billy graham, a very under-rated trainer imo, yeah his fighters do get hit far too much with the style he teaches but offensively they were quality and up to a certain level, the style is very very effective. Would love to have seen hatton getting a quality second man with billy to work on technique etc after the floyd fight instead of going with Mayweather senior, who had some success with changing his style but when the big test came hatton ended up looking confused and reverted back to the graham style which we all knew would happen. It was always going to be too late to change him. Actually had money on hatton for the fight thought he was going to over-power pacquio...shows you what i know . Also genius from freddy roach about hatton ****ing his fist just before he punched, i'd never picked on that until he mentioned it after the fight, with that he basically worked ricky out, not that pac-man needed much help in the end.
Exactly, and he wasn't just fighting Floyd that night. Cortez wouldn't let Hatton fight his fight. Not saying he would've won, but...
If the fight would of been in England I think it would of been a totally different fight, Floyd probably on points but it would of been one of his toughest fights for sure
