Not that true boxing elitism. Good fighters, but never great it seems. I can't think of any in recent memory. Pascal is a pretty average fighter. Bute was supposed to be something and ended up being worse than Pascal. Adonis Stevenson still hasn't proven much to me at this point, and he's old and doesn't seem at all interested in what would be his biggest challenge in Kovalev. Troy Ross was talented but seemed to waste years. Steve Molitor got exposed by Cabalerro and never lived up to the hype. David Lemieux was supposed to be the next big thing @ Middleweight for Canada and got crushed by Rubio. There are probably more in recent years, but these are the ones that really stick out to me. They just don't seem to produce elite fighters.

Imo its too early to count out Adonis.... although he might meet his end at the hands of Kova, he just might wind up on the 'elite' scale if he keeps up these performances in 2014 against top guys. Then again, yes he is getting old, and he seems vulnerable to me. But should be beat Kova (which I don't think he will) or Froch, Ward, ect... then imo he cant be denied the credit. The dudes been beasting lately.

    Bute, nine title defense.
I am not talking about Canada.
Pascal, first to expose Chad Dawson.
Stiverne is going to be HW champ soon (probably).
Dierry jean is fight against Pederson next month.
    + Superpimp.
That is all in a 8 millions people state (Quebec) who also produced GSP with 15 title fights before 31.
That is just from few years in.

Nobody in Canada cares about boxing unfortunately... MMA is more popular here.

I can not think of a single friend I have who would even know who Pascal or Bute are... even the ones who know a bit about boxing.

That's pretty telling right there. I thought boxing was more on the horizon for Canada as far as sports is concerned.

That's what I mean. If you stacked him against the best fighters around his weight over the last decade, he would not be amongst the best by any means. But of course he's better than average. He's just not elite by any means.

Canada is probably too comfy a country to live in. It's much easier to produce quality fighters when your country is a shithole.

I find this claim a little misguided considering boxing isn't and hasn't historically been given a great deal of attention and resources here in Canada. It says enough that Quebec is the only location in Canada (a country of a mere 33 million btw) that produces talent, since it's the only province with coaches worth a damn and actual FANS of the sport. I'd say that all things considered, we're doing quite well. If the sport were given the push that hockey was, things would be different. Don't even try to claim funding doesn't help sport achievement. Our success at the Vancouver winter Olympics relative to past games would suggest otherwise. And like another poster said, MMA is the combat sport of choice here.

And I know a lot of british posters on here are butthurt about it, but Lennox Lewis did win a gold for Canada in the ams, which the thread starter conveniently ignored (but maybe you were referring to pro's specifically).

    :deal This. Right there.

First of all, it's not Canada, which doesn't give a **** about boxing and hasn't produced anything noticeable since Molitor. It's Québec. Canada is a coherent country only on paper. Ontario and Quebec, despite being neighbours, are a lot more different on an historical and cultural basis than, say, Kansas would be from Alberta. What happens in Saskatchewan does interest me, but to the same degree as Montanan news.

This also extends to boxing. World class fights are a pretty recent thing on the local scene, pretty much starting with the Hilton brothers (who nobody in English Canada knows despite the fact they're anglophone Montrealers), and slowly but steadily grew from there. Another very important figure for Québec boxing was Éric Lucas, who wasn't that talented but a massive over-achiever who fed on popular support.

Both Bute and Pascal would stand any chance against Kovalev, Stevenson or Shumenov.................neither have a future there................

These guys need a Sam Langford for inspiration. That's the thing is here in America, our fighters have legends like Langford in our history to inspire our fighters. It's like a type of patriotism.

    Indeed. Like Haiti.
