Millions of tax free dollars don't just disappear, they are sheltered. Pacquiao isn't broke as Philippines elites have been known for utilizing tax havens in order to shelter their millions according to a well founded report by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) - see, Secrecy For Sale: Inside The Global Offshore Money Maze.

Unfortunately, there are many others who are not as protected as he is and who, indeed, lose much of their money. Hopefully, they will do their best to avoid any such misfortune.

Personally it makes me feel better to know I have more money in the bank than some people who have made millions of dollars and pissed it all away.

Sad. There are as many broke caucasian guys, Tommy Morrison, Ryan Leaf ... Guys like Lenny Dykstra are far worse, they not only went broke, they took tends of thousands of people with them with their scams. The point is being stupid is not a black/white thing.

    1) poor people typically make bad financial decisions
    2) dumb people typically make bad financial decisions

boxers are always number 2 and very often start out as number 1. additionally, throw into the mix that they are brain damaged to hell by the time their career ends, which will also impair their ability to make sound decisions.

almost all of them, except the ones who luck out with tv deals and such like, will end up without a pot to **** in.

Mayweather has ring smarts but his gambling habit, tendency not to pay his taxes and poor investment decisions like the casino he lent $4million to that went bankrupt suggests once the money from boxing stops he will end up broke.

David Tua lost everything, lives in his gym, split from his wife and has creditors lining up. He talks about it in this video.

I hate it when managers and promoters are blamed for these things.

There are specific cases where boxers were robbed of money due them by managers or promoters, but this is not always the case -- frankly I don't even think it's often the case. It's too easy to say "well the poor boxer isn't to blame" without some accounting of what they did with all that money. If the manager or promoter made better decisions with their share of the money it is not their duty to give away their hard-earned money to a boxer who in many cases pissed away what they had.

I remember Mike Tyson had annuities set up that would have delivered him half a million a year (or was it a million?) for life if he had just left the money alone. He cashed them in and blew them on tigers and jewelry and lavish spending sprees.

I knew a boxer who made it to contender status (I think he fought for one title) and signed with Don King. He lived in an apartment, a very nice one. So he decides to rent the apartment next door, knock some walls out, put in very expensive tile, new carpets, all sorts of permanent fixtures -- literally tens of thousands of dollars that he knew would then belong to the apartment owner when he moved on ... then he moves out.

I know another guy who is currently ranked who has probably purchased five expensive vehicles in the last 2 years. And a motorcycle. And he flies to Vegas or even overseas to fights, bringing along a few "friends" (hangers-on), all on his bill. I know one trip cost probably $50,000 for several days in Vegas. That money is GONE.

In both cases, their managers (two different managers) sat down with them more than once, even put it in writing, practically begging them to stop being so foolish with their money, telling them that what they are making today could go away tomorrow -- setting up appointments with financial people for retirement plans and tax shelters, advising them to buy a house instead of wasting money on rent (so the house would be paid for regardless of what happens to them down the road), etc. The boxers look them in the eye and nod their head and say, "Yes, I understand" ... and go blow more money.

FWIW to those trying or wanting to make this a racial thing, one guy is black and one is white.

It's sad, really sad, but it's their money and the culture we live in today is such that having a shiny new car with shiny new rims and shiny new jewelry around their necks is valued more than security in their later days.

About 10 years ago; I seen Iran Barkley outside a restaurant in NYC. I went up to him for photo and he was nice, but could barely talk. He wanted to go home and get his tapes of his fights and bring them to my hotel. He was looking for some money. I heard he was living in the projects in NYC with his Mom.

Man that sucks it really does. I think these boxers need to be taught how to manage their money.
