Let's embark on a little project. Here we have Primo Carnera, a mountain of a man but one who was a manufactured heavyweight as opposed to a natural.

Your job is to take Da Preem and try and make him a more effective fighter. He is a clean slate and you can do whatever you like to change him, bar giving him super powers or abilities that he never had, like Ali''s speed or Foreman's punch.
You can only work with what you've got, but feel free to change his style, strategy and increase or decrease his fighting weight.

He is fighting in the same era as he did, so for the most part he will be fighting much smaller men.

He is now your charge. What do you do to try and improve him?

Set him up with Patches O'Houlihan as chief second.

A lot, starting with his jab, he ought to be shooting that out there far more often and with more force, seems like he always paws with it and allows these much smaller guys to get on the inside. Obviously after that I'd go with the straight right which I hardly ever see, a few powerful jabs followed by a big straight and left hook at mid range would be highly beneficial, considering the only time I ever see him attempt to throw combos is on the inside and when doing so he seems to prefer hooks, though that right uppercut should be his initial reaction once a fighter closes the distance, and he looks good whenever he does throw it.

Lastly, he seems to place his weight over his left foot and hunches over a bit, I'd have him more on his right and leaning back a bit to use his height and reach to it's full potential and be ready to land a devastating straight.

He lacked good power, and a good chin and you can't fix those.

Thanks, this is exactly what I'm looking for. :good

I know Carnera wasn't the most naturally gifted guy; that is the point of this thread in a way: to take a flawed fighter and improve him to make him less flawed.
There are some things in his favour though. His size, for one. Surely that can be used to good effect in some ways?

I know he's not beating Louis regardless of improvements, but for fun let's try to make him better.

I suspect that there isn't a whole lot more that could be done with him to be honest.

I think Abe Attel did a good job of polishing him, and making use of what physical attributes he had, and I think that he was an overachiever.

Sometimes a fighter just finds their level.

The fact that his sized was never fully utilized hurt him a lot. If his fighting style was tailored to his strength he could have been great, but it always seems to me like he fought like he was average sized.
