What coursed the stoppage of Benvenuti in the second Monzon-fight?

Only recently I had the opportunity to watch the Nino Benvenuti´s attempt to win back the Midleweight title from Carlos Monzon. The fight was stopped when Benvenutis corner threw in the towel in surrender. It was the end for Benvenuti. Reports from the fight gave the impression that Benvenuti was completely outboxed. I think he looks good. Actually in a very good shape. He was known for being better the second time around. And the stunt by the Argentinian camp - having their own referee replacing Arthur Mercante - suggest something was rotten i Monaco.
The same referee was the third man in the ring, when Denny Moyer challenged Monzon..and Moyer was also stopped prematurely.
    Í can´t find any footage of the Moyer-fight -
Monzon turned out to be a great fighter - mostly taking care of his opponents by the help of his fists, but . . .?

Yes that was a strange one. I thought Nino looked up for the fight but Monzon's strength was getting to him. That looked like huge left hook to me that put him down at the end of the second. Like you say though, why would his corner throw the towel in when they did? Maybe they just thought Monzon was gonna get him out of there at some point. No wonder he wasn't happy about it.

Argentine referees have a special place in their heart for Argentine fighters. They make German judges and Italian referees look impartial. At least during the 60s and 70s.

This was a strange ending but Benvenuti was shot. He wasnt going to win this fight.

Danish newspapers gave the fight a lot of attention as Dane Tom Bogs would´ve been next in line for Benvenuti if Benvenuti had won. BT reported that the change of referee was coursed by the Argentinians fear of getting robbed. Benvenuti had called Monzon a dirty fighter and a disqaulification win for Benvenuti was a possibility, the Argentinians had to mininize. Victor Avandano was an Argentinian crew-member and he suddenly found himself upgraded. Arthur Mercante would never have accepted the corner throwing in the towel.

I don't know about Monaco but I can think of at least a couple occasions where away fighters have been disqualified in Italy.

Have a look at Juan Carlos Duran's record. He won 6 fights on DQ in Italy including one against my mate Johnny Pritchett in a European title fight. John was that disgusted he never boxed again. Ironically Duran was born in Argentina but was based out of Italy.

I always wondered why he retired. Dane Tom Bogs was robbed in Italy, defending the title against Duran. And Pritchett vs. Duran was followed by Danish media, as next in line for Bogs could be Prichett defending against Bogs.
    Send my regards to Johny.

Greetings klomp! I know the fight you're referring to. Fraser has a book out there somewhere. I've read 'snippets' and would like to get it. Now you've got me piqued. I'm going to try to find it on Amazon tonite.
I do remember a quote from Fraser that Monzon was the one fighter that he knew he had no chance of beating.

Greetings Claus from Indianapolis, IN! Hope your weather in Denmark is better than we're having.
I'm looking forward to receiving the book. Scott was an interesting fellow. Athlete in multi-sports (from either Washington state or Oregon) who suddenly realized that he had major boxing skills and went pro.
As mentioned previously, he was disqualified in the Benvenuti fight for 'head butting' which was a scam! Nothing against Nino, I think he was an ATG. The few chapters I read years ago also had him discussing his South African fight with the tough Pierre Fourie where he was approached before the fight by a couple of 'thugs' that told him to lay off of Pierre's damaged eye. To be fair, the 'thugs' said Fourie knew nothing about them, it was their call. Scott's comments on the fight were very interesting.
Blessings Claus, its always a pleasure to communicate with someone from the 'continent'!
