Well fellas from last year boxing had it's first $150m dollar PPV fight with the MM v Canelo getting just over 2m buys MM getting $41,500,000 for his nights work not bad for 36 minutes work. That figure is prior to PPV bonuses added on.

Still bonuses aside a little shy of the second highest grossing PPV fight MM had to settle for only $25m against ODLH in 2007.Oscar when all figures toted up paid $52m dollars of the $136m that fight made.

Nothing like a $52m dollar payday to ease the split decision loss sure you will all agree.Proof being your boxing ability is only the half of it!

Another question for MakingWeight and Dempsey:

Again apologies for my lack of knowledge.

What is involved in the whole "purse bids" process?

Dempsey will have the inside track on this one JonStevo but here is my working of it this end. Will give a decent example using the recent BJS v John Ryder British title fight.

The fight has to be made by a certain date when a mandatory defence in the case of BJS. Matchroom-Ryder,BJS-FW have date by which the BBBOC (British board) want the fight to be made.If both can agree figures etc all good & straightforward but many things come into play.If by a set time frame this all cannot be agreed it goes to purse bids both sides make a bid to what they think the fight is worth closed envelope to the BBBOC.Highest offer wins.

    Seems straightforward enough IT ISN'T.

I used that fight because Matchroom won the initial bid can't remember the exact figures but BJS was getting 51k of the split great money for a British title fight anyway purse bids got re-ordered the paperwork was filled out wrong!Due to a complaint from BJS promoters.FW won the second round of purse bids where the new bid touched around 100k...even better for both & BJS especially. On tv boxnation his promoters channel won the bid.Massive purse & over the odds for a domestic level fight.

The other scenario is BJS had the right to walk away at any point thus title becomes vacant which is what people thought would happen had Matchroom won the initial bid.Fun & games certainly!

Usually a purse bid situation occurs when the parties can't agree on terms or purse. Let's say one of the ratings organizations orders "Champ A" to defend against his mandatory or in the case of an eliminator number 1 and 2 fight to decide who is the next challenger or for a vacant title. The organization gives the parties a negotiating period, about 30 days, If the parties can't agree on purse or terms then a purse bid situation arises. Sometimes used as a tactic to get a shot or a title. If champ "A" still says no, the threat of a purse bid arises where the title could be vacated or the terms might be unfavorable, so champ "A" has to decide to take it or give up the crown. Now in the case of a purse bid any registered promoter can bid for the fight. To register for a purse bid the promoter has to pay a registration fee about $20,000. If your next door neighbor came up with the registration fee he would be allowed to bid on the fight. Now comes the fun if champ "A" agrees to the purse bid the split is 65-35% of the deal. The promoters make their bid's based on what they think of the fight. Champ "A", then has maybe 2wks to accept or vacate his title. The purse bid can be over the location or what promoter promotes the show. The wonderful wacky world of purse bids, yes sir.

Good interview with David Price here last night rebuilding his career after the back to back defeats with Thompson. The fight from Germany was shown watching it we learned one thing the most important point imo when a career is at the stage his is at...make or break his management team at last have a plan to work off.

However it turns out for Price because his chin will always be a major problem the plan is to use the most basic tool a HW his size will always have.

He has a very powerful right but has underused the jab.The plan Saturday under Tommy Brooks was not to throw anything other than jabs or straight shots no hooks, uppercuts no groundbreaking stuff.Keep it at range because without saying it they know the problem is right under his nose....his chin!

Sparring has been stopped constantly Price said which he finds frustrating at first but understands now why to expose technical flaws.Brooks by doing this is giving Price basic instructions Boxing kept simple sometimes for some fighters it's the best way to keep it.

Soon it will be open season in the HW division much like the post Holmes pre Tyson era most of us remembering would like to forget!

Vitali Klitschko has swapped the boxing ring for the political one so who's left?
That's right Wladimir the younger brother soon to follow into retirement no doubt.

Price is certainly not in their class as fighters but cast your mind back to 2003 Corrie Sanders destroyed big Wlad chin exposed big time. What did he do to rebuild yes you have got it came back fought largely from range with a ramrod jab & mainly straight shots it can't work for all.

You have to admire it when even the most basic of plans come together for Price it may just mean being engineered to at least get some good money fights a journey a plan.

Price will probably never be better than an audley harrison however... cant teach a chin... even wlad has a better chin than price that first thompson fight he went down on the softest hook ive ever seen... sad to think he used to be considered a threat to the klits... i thought he would give them a good fight at one time haha

Being a free agent is hard cos you have to keep knocking on doors to get fights. The promoter then has no obligation to build you up, a free agent unless he has something the promoter can use, like a following, sells tickets, or has great amateur credentials, or he makes good fights. If he doesn't then the promoter will look to make good fights where the fighters are almost 50-50, and believe no matter how good you are, hard tough fights burn out guys after a while especially at the beginning.
Having a promoter is way better, cos then he will invest in the fighters future and keep you active and look to build rather then be put in 50-50 fights. despite what you may think or believe just about every fighter who has become HOF'r's and ATG's have been taken care of. Even the greatest fighters Sugar Ray Robinson, Joe Louis, Mayweather, Julio Cesar Chavez sr, Jr big time, Duran, Marciano, had their share of turkey's.
IF a promoter shows interest, work out a deal where it's fair to each side. Have an attorney look it over, negotiate in good faith. Don't overprice yourself. Research what the purses are for beginners, you can ask your local commission they know what the purses are. If you can't afford an attorney, then read it yourself. If you don't understand it PM me and I will explain it to you. Believe me he would be better off signing with a promoter, just be careful with the terms of the deal, how many fights per yr, how much for 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 rd fights, the term of the contract. If you need more ask, Bueno Luck

Had mixed results Saturday in Laredo Roberto Marroquin lost to Alejandro Rodriguez a tough journeyman but the blind judges gifted my guy with a draw, I told him to retire. My welter scored his 2nd one rdr in Laredo when he blasted his opponent. If you want to see it, go on youtube and type in "Alex el cholo Saucedo". On the Marroquin fight I have to be honest Rodriguez won that fight. The draw just means that it just might prolong his career and that is dangerous for him, if he can't beat a journeyman with 13 losses, where is his career going? I had a choice of opponents Alejandro Rodriguez and Edgar Riovalle, Rodriguez was the lesser fighter, Riovalle would have given him a worse beating.

Fighters have to be told sometimes when they are unrealistic in where they think they can go.Can they move up in levels, they have but come up short?Have they plateaued as a fighter, the game has taken the best you have?Have they found their level be it domestic low as journeyman level (4 rounders) or as high as competitive 10 rounders? This especially when a fighter has reached the height of their career & start to slide opportunities missed.

Your circumstances come into play of course ($,£) but if you don't want to just become a name on someone elses record is it for you anymore? If you don't train right, live right & the hunger goes some hard questions of yourself need to be asked.

You are a long time retired they say in sport it makes people go on to have that one more season in most sports we all see the veteran player that we remember at their peak but go on too long.'Hay he isn't as good as he was!'We have all said it.

This is different, this is boxing better to have walked away one fight less than one too many.Truth certainly hurts sometimes.

We had a real throwback fight here at the weekend Gavin Rees v Gary Buckland SD Buckland that probably for me should of gone the other way.Marginal but fantastic domestic fight both went to the well & then some.Whatever the rest of the year brings it will be one of the domestic fights of the year. Two friends out of the ring as well all put aside for 12 hard rounds.

For Rees the record books will show the third loss on the trot for him no shame in any of those defeats the last two certainly as close as the scorecards suggest.

He may now call it a day if so can walk away head held high became a champion was at times here in the UK not given the credit he deserved.

Old school fighter that extracted more out of his career than many thought he would he can have no regrets whatever he does.Game, battle hardened, determined with nothing given to him credit to Welsh & UK Boxing.

All that was missing Saturday was the fans throwing money into the ring in appreciation of the show put on by both as they used to do back in the day.Hopefully the Rees management team say to him what he needs to be told imo...leave them wanting more you had a great career.
