Get him away from his dodgy connections, work on his self-esteem.
Teach him balance, mobility and get his hands up.
Give him a strong jab not a waving arm.
Make him a mean bully not a *****cat.

But with his condition (acromegaly) I think he would always be ponderous like valuev and exposed by quicker reflexes (Baer and Louis).

Maybe he needs more mental than physical work. He was described as humble and shy.....give him Holyfields ego and Tysons mean street-smarts and maybe he could have gained more of a reputation. I think its sad he is thought of as a joke. Used up and thrown away by boxings darker side.

First we need to look at how his Abe Attel actually developed his style. One way to get a handle on this is to watch the Gains fight, then watch the second Sharkey fight. Look at the raw product that Attel was working with, and how he actually developed it.

At the time of the Gains fight Carnera had decent boxing ability, and was good on the inside, but he did not use his reach or size effectively. It is understandable that Attel chose to build on his existing strengths, rather than start again from scratch.

Attel seems to have taught him to use his physical advantages lot more. In Skarkey II he Uses his jab and foot work to keep Sharkey at range, and switches onto the inside hen Sharkey gets in close. Towards the end of the fight he is getting good at anticipating Sharkey, and having his inside game ready as Sharkey makes his move, and this is why Sharkey ultimately comes unstuck. He also displayed good use of leaning and smothering tactics in the Tommy Loughran fight.

In all I think that Attel did a pretty good job of adding new tools, while building on Carnera’s existing strengths. He almost certainly made the difference between him being an also ran and a champion. You can say why didn’t he do this, and why didn’t he do that, but he might have unravelled him by trying to change his style too dramatically.

All thigs considered, Carnera wasn't that bad a boxer. He moved well for a man his size but his balance needed work. Plus I would have him bring his hands up and elbows in more to protect his chin better. He pawed too much with his jab instead of snapping it out and seemed to follow it with his body by putting too much bodyweight on his front foot. Same thing with his right hand. Snap it out from the shoulder instead of throwing from a lower starting point...and stop holding his chin out like a lantern. It wouldn't be easy for a heavily muscled man like him to be as fluid as a smaller HW but it would help him if he tightened things up some.

I'd call in Freddy Roach and teach him to use a jab, learn some footwork, and employ boxing technique in his matches. After a series of bouts with over sized tomato cans, I'd put him into the ring with some real boxers and hope for the best.

For his size his footwork was good,as for," a series of bouts with oversized tomato cans". That was largely his resume!

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet or not but his Italianness was a rather big drawback. Same thing happened to Pianeta. Garlic is part of it. The lion's share, possibly. What it does is desynchronise the brian and makes you a moran. I don't mean this in a racist way. I'm just talking about pugilism. If you had an EEG biofeedback machine, you would understand.

As they say in the building business, he's a teardown , not a renovation.

Carnera was a good athlete for his size, very big, and very strong. He did not always use his attributes to their max.

If he had been American, he would almost certainly have got a better write up in the press.

That's way off … if he did not build up his career with dumped fights , a secret to no one, he would have been taken more seriously … in addition, as Wilt Chamberlain famously said, "Nobody likes Goliath."
