Joe Calzaghe retired 46-0 (32) in 2008. Get over it. Fans & haters; quit trolling!

things to be impressed by joe - awesome longevity (he maintained prime to his mid30s, or perhaps peaked late) and awesome engine. A good chin makes him a handful for any SMW.

the things you are referring to which are not impressive are his latent boxing skills which are by no means particularly good, he was easy to hit, and offensively had a very poor strike rate, more befitting a national champ than a world one. his good engine and awkward southpaw stance helped make up for this lack of ability to land well.

the amount of cheat stoppages he got in wales is impressive too.

 

Joe Calzaghe retired half a decade ago, it's too late to be impressed with him now.

 

I don't think his style is exciting......but as a fighter he was excellent. Exceptional stamina, fast hands, great chin, desire, heart, mental toughness, underated boxing skills. Although not a banger, Calzaghe's accuracy with his punches were good, combined with him throwing his shots in bunches. One of his biggest strengths was that he combined the above mentioned into his southpaw stance which made him a difficult proposition for any opponent. Many boxers struggle with southpaws but Calzaghe was different. How many fighters in history can you compare Calzaghe too? I can't really think of anyone. Once read an article saying Maxie Rosenbloom was similar but I don't know enough about that fighter. Calzaghe was an excellent fighter, one of the best to come out of the British shores.

I was never impressed by him, but respect him as he should be respected not like his deluded fans...I hate his style it isnt pleasing on the eye at all for me, especially after hand injuries with his slapping no technique punches yes i know he had hand issues but it was terrible to look at, man just that gif vs Hopkins is shameful to see the worst combination of "punches" ever thrown by champion, i dont care if blind judges score that as punches its disgusting...

 

Yup i was impressed by his work rate, and he was fast but his speed is overrated, looking fast when throwing meaningless punches is different from speed with putting power in his shot. Either way he was fast but his combination on ropes where every 5th punch has any power on it is like shadowboxing...

 

yep, good reflexes, good chin, great stamina, great management.

but low accuracy, easy to hit, little power, national/regional level opponents 99% of the time.

As for American 'heroes', I didn't even know who Hopkins and roy jones were until youtube started putting fights up regularly post 2006/7, I was sidelined from boxing after the 90s due to the large subscription costs. SO they were certainly never my heroes, but then nor is joe.

Yes he impressed me. His performances against Eubank and Lacy stand out for me. But he also underwhelmed me with a string of poor opponents.

He wasted his prime, he was a much better fighter than his resume suggests. Speed, workrate, iron chin, great footwork, adaptable and even had power before his hand problems. Throw in an awkward southpaw style and you have a fighter who would give anyone trouble. Only real weakness he had was a tendency to stay too long in the pocket and a lack of self belief and desire to push himself.

 

Let's see a guy with a 46-0 record that isn't even mentioned in the upper echelon of ATG's. Maybe by Wales or European standards, but on a world level, not even close. Easily a guy "that good" and unbeaten should be a top 5 or top 10 guy P4P universally right? WRONG!!!!!

Joe made himself a lot of money beating consistent mid level opposition. Nothing wrong with that. When Jeff Lacy is being mentioned as one of your best wins, nothing else needs to be said.

 

I was not impressed untill he punished Jeff Lacy for being Jeff Lacy.
