He was obviously very good but wasn't tested at the elite level. His biggest tests were Eubank, Kessler and Hopkins. Kessler was always a B level fighter at best, Eubank and Hopkins too were B level fighters by the time Calzaghe got to them. Therefore I would say Joe was an A level fighter but he never faced someone who would be in that same class so we don't know how he compares to other elites.

hops was by far the superior boxer whilst not gaspng for air, but though the fight is pretty much either way, I think Hopkins blatant cheating tips the decision against him.sure joe cheated too but not as much and only because he realised he was being beaten fair and square for 6 rounds. and would lsoe if he didn't.

SMW is historically one of the weakest divisions in the history of the sport. His best win was Kessler, and that's not saying much.

Wow Calzaghe is taking an absolute thrashing in this thread.

I didn't realize there was such little reverence for Calzaghe among the average ESB poster. I guess it's just a handful of obsessive fans that make it seem like a large contingent.

Joe captivated me in his fight against Lacy. I watched it again and again and again.

Unfortunately, he fought as a man with broken hands would, and as such was not particularly exciting. He got his share of gift stoppages (Manfredo stoppage was so british it still stinks) and there is at least one fight where it could have gone either way (Hopkins, I had Calzaghe ahead by 1 point) but truth be told, there isn't a super middleweight out there that would be a clear favourite against good old Joe. I would give him an edge against even Andre Ward, and the only fighter I could see beating him convincingly is prime RJJ.

Calzaghe actually came to America and fought Hopkins and Jones. Ward would never leave his home town to fight anyone.............

    Basically, yeah.

At some point Bailey will come in here and say something like:

Ward has yet to beat a prime, undefeated fighter. His best win to date is an unwell, double vision suffering Kessler who is a Calzaghe leftover

    etc etc etc

Then someone else from the weirdest (read: saddest) internet clique I've ever witnessed (TeamElite) will write a page and half where they fellate themselves and Calzaghe. It's a weird sub culture, incestuous by nature and self admiring.

Roy Jones Jr: Calzaghe is a fantastic fighter

Manny Stewart: Calzaghe is very, very special, I look at the little things he does, the little adjustments he makes and he impresses the hell out of me

Charles Brewer: Calzaghes combinations were unreal!

Byron Mitchell: I've never been hit so hard, so accurate, so fast

Chris Eubank: Joe Calaghe was a great fighter

Sakio Bika: Joe Calzaghe is the most skillful opponent I have faced (Oh dear Andre!)

Angelo Dundee: Joe Calzaghe is a great fighter

Mikkell Kessler: When he changed his tactics, I couldn't hit him!

All of these guys seemed pretty impressed

In fact reading those quotes makes the assessments by the "experts" in this thread laughable

^^^ That can't be right, the ESB experts say he is an average slapper with nothing impressive about him?

who is this "Jones JR" guy who said Calzaghe is one of the greatest of all time?

and Hagler? What the **** does he know about boxing?

i can't say that i was impressed....but i know that i didn't think he was all that....and that he did a great job of hiding behind his promoter. when he beat lacy...i really wasn't impressed with lacy to begin with so i was like eh...and when he beat kessler....i had never saw or heard of kessler prior. kessler didn't impress me either. he looked like a typical straight up and down euro fighter.

as for joecals wins over jones and bhop. eh. both were past their primes. both of those fights should have happened years before.

Guys please stop abusing Slyk!! He has a right to hate Calzaghe. It must really hit him hard when he was made homeless from when his dad bet his house on Lacey to beat Calzaghe.
