This is a great match up that I don't hear speculated upon very often. Who would win in a bout between a prime Joe Louis and a prime Larry Holmes?

    I think probaly Louis.

I just don't think that Holmes was mobile enough to keep away from him.

Louis had issues with good jabbers. Holmes would be the best jabber Louis fought, except Holmes unlike say Walcott or Conn would have a significant height and reach advantage on Louis.

Unlike Walcott or Conn, Holmes had a great chin and recuperation powers. This is a great name match on paper, but if they had meet in the ring, I think Holmes wins 10-5 rounds, and possible scores a late round TKO over Louis. Louis did not have the feet or defense to match up with Holmes as a boxer. Holmes always fought smart. Can't see him doing something stupid late like Conn or Walcott did.

Holmes could be hit with the right hand...we're talking Joe Louis here...

Interesting matchup to say the least. Right now I can't pick a clear cut winner though I lean toward Louis. Holmes could be tagged with a good right hand but the fighters who nailed him couldn't seem to follow thru and capitalize on it. Of course Holmes had something to do with that but still none of the men that hurt Holmes were as good at finishing a hurt opponent as Joe Louis. If...note I say if not when...Louis hurts Holmes bad, he won't let him off the hook. If men like Shavers and Snipes can hurt Holmes with a right, one shudders to think what Louis would do to him. If Holmes can avoid that scenario he stands a very good chance of decisioning Louis...If he can't it's Louis by KO.

Were seeing the same thing here. The Louis who could zip in those right hands like he did with Primo would likely stop Holmes or have him trying to move and stay away for most of the fifteen. Were talking right hands like landed by Tyson, Shavers, and Snipes but enough of them to really put Larry on the defensive.

It seems at some point, Joe would catch eventually Larry with a combination to put him away

But,, that's not how I see it going. Joe would have problems on the way to achieving a win by knockout

I cant forget how Joe was hurt himself on several occasions (inevitable when making so many defenses)

I believe Larry would drop the right hand on Joe's chin and ruin him, hurt him worse than Conn

Joe can fight when hurt but Larry is even better while fighting hurt and dangerous. he doesnt just grab and hold on, he fights

while Joe is the better of the two putting punches together, Larry is more effective at long range and what makes him even better is his sneak right hand which when placed properly, causes a sudden and violent jolt which I dont think Joe could just shake off

As unlikely as it might seem, I think Larry scores the knockout here and puts him away between rds 11 - 13

Louis could be hit with right hands as well. Larry Holmes had a sharp one and knew how to set it up.

Best way I can put it is Holmes should but Louis could.

If Lawrence fights smart and doesn't fall asleep in ther I think he out boxes Joe to eventually stop him late. Louis has that equalizer though and he was a great finisher.

$ on it I gotta go Holmes.

Louis would hurt Holmes with the right hand but unlike Shavers and Snipes Louis was also one of the best finishers to live...."He could run but he cant hide" and Larry may have some early success with the jab and decide to mix....Brown Bomber by KO

    What makes you say this?

While Louis had problems with some of the things that Holmes was, I cant think of any fight where somebody gave him trouble, where the jab was the deciding factor in it.

Good matchup ! You could easily see a scenario where Homes boxes aggressively yet carefully behind his trademark jab. Mixing in his sharp right cross he should cruise to a 12 or 15 RD UD. But... The way Shavers got to him in their second fight... One shot,I think Shavers had it over everyone ... But, Louis is one of (if not the) best finishers in the history of the sport. So, could Louis catch Holmes and the finish him ?? So Holmes wins the first one but Louis takes the rematch ! Because we all know that nobody touched the Brown Bomber the second time around !!
