Im not saying holmes is a really great win for tyson im saying its not as bad as made out. See this interview 3 months before the fight, there is another on somewhere talking about how hard hes been training for tyson ect. http://youtu.be/m861f99Nkvk
Tysons prime was short? How long did Holyfields title run last? 2 years in those 2 years he fought crackhed Bert cooper, an old man in foreman and an even older larry Holmes, Holyfield then loses his titles to Riddick Bowe, who in essence was a slightly more glorified and more consistent Buster Douglas. Its all good winning the title multiple times but by winnng it that many times means you must have lost it a number of times too. How long did Lewis title reign last? He wins it after beating Tyson leftovers and then gets knocked out 2 years later by Tysons sparring partner. And Young George Foremans prime? Consisted of 3 fights, Norton Frazier and Gypsy Joe Roman, his title run lasted not even 2 years and after the Jungle Foreman was mentally ****ed and had to change his style Listons title run consisted of beating Patterson twice before being dethroned by Ali, his title run lasted 2 fghts i cant remember how long Fraziers title run but i don't think it was as long as Tysons, ill have to double check Tysons title run was much better than given credit for
I have championed Mike Tyson on this forum for many years. In a word, he at his best made the other greats at their best seem like something akin to bums. He was near the top of the heap of all the heavyweight champions.
No doubt the money he would make was an attraction, but I don't buy into it for a minute that Larry fought Mike only for the money. Larry's a proud guy and hated losing. If Larry was broke and living on the streets then I could believe it, but he was doing financially fine in retirement and didn't need the money. I personally think he thought he could pull off a win.
the only one i have doubts about 86-88 tyson beating is 65-67 ali. i think he would have beaten louis marciano foreman holmes etc holyfield would always have given him a decent fight i think he would have walked through lewis and the klitchskos .
Tyson was the best 20 year old Heavyweight I have ever seen. He was very well taught and peaked very early. We later found out about his lack of discipline and mental strength, which puts him down in any all time list. He was also a bit of a one trick pony; if he couldn't blast you out he had no Plan B. James Tillis showed the way to beat him, and Buster Douglas followed the plan to a tee against a below par Tyson. All that said, on his best night Tyson was fast, ferocious and hard hitting enough to give any fighter from any era a tough fight.
Yeh..some great posts..Azzer yours was hard to disagree with..well argued..as i said at the start it was a revisit of Mikes reign-opposition... i dont agree with those that seem to put Lennox down by comparison..the difference between Lennox and Mike Is that no boxer ever bettered lennox...true he lost twice but no fighter was ever clearly his superior in any given fight. Many posters have put up some good points supporting Mikes reign...although i still think he has some 'names' on his list that werent in a good place at the point at which they met him. Holmes was clearly underprepared and the likes of Spinks just didnt show up...although this was due to the aura Tyson created and earned.
As Tyson himself said after the fight it was great to have Holmes name on his record but he knew Larry was past it. Not only that but he had been off for 18 months and just wasn`t on his game or even that close to it. Upon closer inspection the win doesn`t look like much. With that said the way Tyson took care of buisness was impressive. He was spectacular and did what he was supposed to do. Beat who they put in front of you.
It's actually an impressive win for Mike. He wasn't prime, but I'm sure Holmes was as prepared as he could be. He was a proud champion who wouldn't take a fight unprepared nor just for the money. A fight with Tyson was in the works as early as 1986. I have the KO magazine where Larry challenged Tyson to, "Show me you can kick my butt!"
Pre fight hype. Ali did alot of talking before he faced Holmes. It just doesn`t really mean that much. Yea Im sure Larry Holmes got himself in the best possible shape he could but he was off along with being past it. Not saying he was a bum but its not even close to Tyson`s best win.
Holmes said recently on Ringside....he was told by DK that the fight was several months away and he agreed to it...then got a call saying be ready in a few weeks...he took it for the money..Larry doesnt shy away from admitting it was all about money...Larry wouldnt let his sparring for the fight be seen by press or public reputably because he knew he was woefully underprepared...master stroke by DK...a very sellable fight and any chance of a Holmes win gone by the short notice....although the odds would still be on a Tyson win....look what Holmes did later when better prepared....as always these things can be seen 2 ways.
