I still remember watching that fight, boy was I going ape**** pissed/worried whenever Cotto was hurt. Think the entire neighborhood heard the yelling. That fight was on the undercard of Peter/Wladimir and boy did it steal the show or what.

wasn't much doubt he was moving up after that

EDIT : if the ref had stopped that fight in round 2 for torres (from memory), I don't think there would have been too many complaints

Torres took that fight on short notice, neither were fully prepared for one another and Cotto clearly thought he would walk over Torres and blow him away early. I loved how Cotto adapted and managed to change things to his favor, though it was obvious that Torres has stamina issues which eventually caught up with him in the fight as Cotto proved he could handle his power early.

Regarding the referee, that's exactly what separates a good referee from a terrible one. A real good referee will always know that a fighter can keep going on even if he looks troubled and almost out.

torres was very crude but he clearly has power, but it took cotto way too long to start boxing and break torres down, when he was losing in exchanges

made for good viewing, but i'm sure cotto learnt from it
they had fought once before (amatuers maybe?). can't remember the result

 

I didn't know they fought as amateurs. Sadly, can't find any footage of the fight or result for that matter on Google.

John Mugabi of Uganda was 26--0 with 26 knockouts and was ranked the number one contender by all three major bodies. The fight was on March 10, 1986 as Hagler had hurt his back and could not fight on the first date booked in 1985. Hagler stopped Mugabi in the 11th round of a brutal fight, both men were hospitalised after the fight.
