What is everyone's opinion on El Chocolatito? How good/skilled is he and has he faced enough top opponents to warrant him as a p4p fighter? Is he almost in the same league as Ricardo Lopez? I've only just recently watched some of his fights and I'm really impressed with what I'm seeing. Boxer-puncher with power in both hands, great punch picker, and excellent combination. Really does remind me of Finito Lopez in a way that he dominates his opponents with pure textbook boxing skills.
Lopes was the first name that came up before I even read the first post:deal If Chocolatito was 15-20lbs bigger, everyone would be talking about him!
Roman Gonzalez seldom makes any mistakes in the ring & always makes you pay Ricardo Lopez/Alexis Arguello type of fighter Rigondeaux hothead managers never envisioned a P4P Mega Showdown with Roman Gonzalez around 115 lbs, a weight Rigondeaux makes with ease. It will be one of the biggest P4P fights in history that takes place in lower weights... Roman Gonzalez clearly dominated 105 & 108, at 112 a rematch with Estrada will add his 3rd division & I feel he is going for Narvaez at 115 lbs :smoke
He really should be ranked, but I think both he and Kazuto Ioka suffer from 2 major things they really have no control over: being in lighter weight classes and from doing practically all their damage in regions the U.S. boxing media tends to overlook. I would have no objections and wouldn't find it at all a hipster doofus move for someone to rate him top 10 P4P.
http://www.eastsideboxing.com/weblog/news.php?p=24102&more=1 I wrote this some years ago, and i'll flatter myself that it still works as a detailed breakdown of his skills and ability. I think he's gotten better but I also think he's stagnated a bit. The only really hard fight he's taken he took by mistake, I think. Anyway, he's got to step up now, because it's easier to make a hard fight at flyweight than an easy one. I've got high hopes. He's not p4p top 10 for me, but is 11 or 12.
Extremely skillful. Hell yes he is a top p4p fighter already. Hell no he can't be put up there with Finito just yet.
I feel Ricardo Lopez does everything as good as Roman Gonzalez, except Finito hits harder & is rangier...making him a H2H favorite everytime they faced off...Also Roman Gonzalez chased the buck & left a chance to dominate 105 ala Finito. Finito cared about his legacy more than $
He has been on the cusp or cracking the top 10 P4P for several years now. Unfortunately, he doesn't have the scalps to truly justify that over several guys. Niida was a long time ago and unfortunately he doesn't have any other A or hardly even B level wins. Looooooooong way to go before we start comparing him to Ricardo Lopez. Lopez is the GOAT of a division and had a gauntlet of recognizable names from that time in it. I follow 105 and 108, and I love Roman, but Roman really does have a lot of journeyman types on his resume as opposed to then or recently ranked contenders like Lopez. It's the nature of the divisions below 126... Always underrated.
It was disappointing to see Ioka's team walk away from that fight, but I'm still holding out hope we'll see it in the future. I can't say I blame them for being a little hesitant to throw Ioka in there at the time, I think he only had 11 fights. Gonzalez is a hell of a step up, even with the great start to his career Kazuto had.
It'd be great to see him get a really big fight against another top rated guy. These smaller guys just can't seem to get into the ring against one another. But that's widespread throughout boxing.
...and protégé thereof. :nod So is Carlos Buitrago, who recently got robbed in his challenge of Merlito Sabillo.
