I'm trying to put myself in the shoes of a fighter...
With Liston, Foreman and Tyson, I might have a ghost of a chance of staying away from them. If I had any skills I might outpoint them.
With Marciano, I know I would get the hell beat out of me no matter what I did.

Vitali Klitschko is very intimidating in the ring; something about his cool, icy, look-right-through-you stare that is pretty unnerving.
I'd love to see Foreman or Tyson try to stare down (well, make that, stare up) Vitali Klitschko.

Chisora certainly wasn't scared of Vitali
and to this day no one has dared to slap Tyson or Foreman

I really do not know if Ali was afraid, or to any significant degree scared of Liston. At the time most thought he was thus acted so crazy. Yet it was a claculated strategy o get into Liston's head, & perhaps pump up his energy & confidence. I recall reading about him going haywire in front of the press & Liston, then the next second really calm. He was running his own strange & effective intimidation game/PR campaign.

Tyson has said many times that it was all an act and that he tried to imitate old boxers and warriors from the past. This alone makes him less intimidating than Liston and Foreman.

Ali wasn't scared of Liston or any other fighter. Pattrson? yes, he was scared of Liston. Norton? Yes, he was scared of Foreman. Michael Spinks? yes, he was scared of Tyson.

You only have to look at the body language of other boxers around VK, even if they are not going to fight him. He seems to dominate everybody except Lewis, who he is tied with.

I think that he was a little intimidated, but that he controled it effectivley, and this was reflected in his manic baehaviour.

I think Liston was worried about Ali (Clay at the time) but kept his cool. He had to be a bit worried in the rematch unless he was an idiot.

What Tyson says today has nothing to do with the time and his performance as an intimidating fighter. Today he has reinvented himself and has endeared himself to others with his stand up performances etc...

    Agree

Ali was confident in his ability but at the same time he had never been at that elite level against another great heavyweight. Liston was already a legend at the time.

Tyson...by a mile although it was unjustified.
His aura scared competent guys out of their wits.
Spinks Bruno Williams Smith etc entered the ring terrified of a guy that physically the dwarfed over.
Buster Douglas stood up to him and Tysons myth was exposed forever.

Ali has already admitted, for the record, that Sonny Liston was the only fighter who ever scared him.

Jeffries seems to have scared guys silly.

I kind of suspect that Johnson had the better of their psychological battle when they met in Reno.

I suspect that Jeffries knew he wasn't at that level anymore and knew he was going to lose. Johnsons mind games just added to it.
