Monzon owned 160 and Foster owned 175 funny but Frazier laughed off Foster moving up to heavyweight and while Bob was a natural 175lber, Monzon was a natural 160lber...no doubt Monzon could have moved up and beaten most of the 175lb guys, the middleweight title was always much more well-esteemed and valued...Tiger lost at middleweight and moved up,so did Torres but when we are talking about a great light-heavy vs a great middleweight I think Monzon did well as Hagler did later on to maintain their comfortable and Natural weight as Foster should have

As i recall there was some short term speculation of Carlos possibly Fighting John Conteh, and i felt that Carlos's walking-tall upright style and his Leaning back from punches whilst so effective against shorter fellow middleweights, would not prove nearly so effective against the cream at 175 against a less than decrepit Bob Foster, Bob's long armed up Jab will find a home even if Carlos does try the Lean Back... and with a right hand ****ed...and the Left Hook a tranquilizer in waiting... Carlos would probably be forced into fighting like he did against Briscoe off the back foot, looking to launch sudden rallies...i think Preying-Mantis Bob would be waiting for this...not a good night for Carlos i fear.

Monzon had no nead for Bob Foster. He made a fortune fighting in Europe, getting paid very well by the promotors and cashing in even more for the TV-rights for SouthAmerica. The 60 seconds between rounds were sold for advertisments and Monzon had no hurry in ending fights early.
I really like Bob Foster but I saw Monzon in Copenhagen 1974, knocking the brains out of his sparringspartners every day. He made it look so easy and then on the night against Tom Bogs - the second he realized Bogs had cutted him - he went to Work, raised his game, changed to another gear and brutally beat the hell out of Tom Bogs.
Of course - Tom Bogs was no Foster - but Monzon was something very speciel. And I think he would have taken Foster out.

I have a lot of respect for Monzon but Foster would have taken his head off if they fought in 1970 or so ..

Fosters manager certainly got Conteh wrong. He stopped Bennett in 5 rounds!

The better light heavies at the time would have won decisively over Monzon. What made him special at middle wouldn't have worked against bigger men he didn't mostly have a range advantage on.

Agreed ... his advantages in size and strength would be neutralized .. I think Conteh would have decisioned him pretty easily .. Foster forget it .. don't even think about Qwai and Spinks ..

I saw the Foster-Ahumada fight in 74 on the undercard of Frazier-Quarry 2. Aging Bob (one of the best ATG at LH) salvaged the draw with that rapier left jab in the final 3-4 rounds. I remember Jorge saying after the fight that "a draw here is like a win".
Interesting thoughts on the Conteh-Bennett scrap. Where ever your alligences run this much is fact. Conteh, along with Bennett had a penchant for head-butting be it intentional or unintential.
Here in Indy, we followed Marvin Johnson's rise and in, I think 76-ish there was a card here in Indy that we were ringside for. Marvin bombed out, I think (memory a little suspect, consult Boxrec :yep) Tom Bethea. The undercard was Yaqui Lopez vs. Lonnie Bennett. Late in the 2nd, I think, Yaqui put Bennett in a puddle with a big right. Up and wobbly, Lonnie survived the round. In the 3rd, Bennett gave a big head to head butt that tore open Yaqui's eye. Shortly thereafter, the ref stopped the fight and gave Lonnie a TKO victory. We were all pissed off! Lopez was poised to knock him out, you could sense it ringside. Isn't there a rule that with a fighter ahead, a head butt constitutes a technical draw or something like that? So much for my home state's rules and refs. Yaqui was twice the fighter Lonnie ever thought he could be!
Thanks for reminding me of that memory. Don Domphy was there that night and I got to say hello and shake his hand.

We agree on that at least. Can you imagine how special Foster would have looked against Bogs? The Danes would have charged him with murder.
