I don't really know what to say about this fight in hindsight. Rigo is probably the best pure boxer that came to Ireland to fight. Either him or Ali.
What a weird thread. Lirva i think the "revisited" part of the title is misleading seeing as your comment on the fight is "i really dont know what to say about this fight". Of course Rigo is one of the greatest technical boxers of our lifetime and it was a ridiculous mismatch. But fair play to Willie for having the balls to jump in, i hope he made a few quid out of it
Don't be silly Jon, you're being very unfair on Lirva. You know he never bets more than 100k on a non-American fight! And sticking 100k on Casey was his most astute bet of the year!
rigo IS a pleasure to watch...agreed. as for casey....this makes me go left of topic and talk about the side-effects or downsides of prizefighter.....casey became european champion in a contest between two boxers who were not even the best in ireland at their weight.....coupled with the prizefighter title they threw him in with rigo...one of the best pound for pound boxers on the planet even then pre-donaire showing...with his huge amateur pedigree and promise of domination as a pro, the likes of a casey should never have been put in with him....he could, and i dont say this lightly, have gotten killed...there is an ocean of class between them.....boxers of course should take opportunities for big belts when they arise, but throwing casey in with rigo was very very dangerous, and its easy for me to talk in hindsight, but it was obvious that casey shouldnt have been let into that ring against the likes of rigo despite his good showings at a much much lower level.
That fight was the biggest buzz-kill ever. Crowd was in a frenzy, incredible atmosphere....then within a couple of minutes it was all over. I really hoped Willie could do better. Willie himself was very pragmatic and hard-nosed about it though. I spoke to him at breakfast the morning after and I was more upset about it than he was. Really decent guy too, took time to make an effort for myself and the missus, two complete strangers interrupting his breakfast the morning after, when let's face it, he can't have been in the best of moods. Very impressed with that aspect of Willie Casey.
Casey will go in with anyone and look to fight, enjoyed watching him in PF and no one can take away the fact that he was European champion but this game is all about levels and for him to be in there with Rigo, was absolutely mental.
More than Martinez vs. Dunne? :think The stakes were obviously lower, for the mere Euro title, but that only lasted half as long at ninety seconds. (also doesn't the Point seat more than double the capacity of the CityWest? ...that's quite a few more locals stunned into silence if both were even close to sold out...)
i'd say so over here casey was hyped a LOT for 5 minutes.....our biggest weekend tv show is the "late late show" and he was on it a couple of times....they even had him and hyland on it promoting their fight. that may not sound like a big deal, but its the highest viewed tv show in ireland.....casey, again for only 5 minutes, had a lot of exposure and hyping here
Hi Doug, not really. Your right he was on tv but not the late late show. He was on the Saturday night show with Brendan O'Connor but that gets nowhere near the ratings that the Late late (Friday Show does.
