Burns won't unify so this is pretty academic Bad move if he does move up to 140 as its way more competitve then the division he is in and he will get badly beaten
If he can make 135lb safely stay there. Better money at 140lb but imo a cash in fight against anyone other than Peterson at world level will be a bridge too far.
He has overachieved as it is. Once he loses the belt he may as well retire. He has zero chance at light welter.
I don't totally agree, I think ricky will never be a ko specialist at any weight but when he first moved up to 135 he looked huge at the weight and I think he could have some success 140. I think it will be a year or two before he does anyway and the 140 division will be different by then against the current crop I agree he may struggle but he would give them all a decent fight
At 135 he hits hard enough to keep fighters off him at lw against the best i think they would walk through him. You never know
You also have to bear in mind that he won't be hitting 140's while at a weight of 135 .............. nobody knows what the extra weight would do to his strength. He's a quick puncher. Strength is great. Speed and strength is even better. But without question it's a far tougher divison than LW.
Burns has business at lightweight to attend to first in Crawford. If Ricky beats Crawford and Ray Beltran can win his next fight then i would personally like to see Burns-Beltran get it on again in Glasgow. But if Burns beats Crawford the doors will open for big fights up at light-welterweight.
i agree this is quite probable , martinez is a **** boxer but has good power at world level , beltran got kod in 2 by a korean dude a year or 2 back on espn and ameth diaz who fought gethin las year dropped him 3 times and stopped him in 4 , ricky made him look like hagler lol
But what your all forgetting is Beltran still couldn't stop Ricky even though the jaw was broke for 10 rounds
What has that got to do with anything? Maidana couldn't stop broner with a broken jaw, does that mean broner deserved a draw? If you batter someone for 12 rounds it should be irrelevant whether you stop them or not.
pleSe go and watch the fight with the volume down and actually watch how many punches hit Ricky's arm when on the ropes
I thought that as well, Burns took a load of shots on the gloves and arms, non scoring shots. I had Beltran just nicking it still but seen far worse decisions than the Beltran burns one.
Personally I felt Beltran was on the wrong side of some home town cooking. My thoughts at the time were the jaw problem seemed to surface after the knockdown but thats just speculation on my part. Beltran was on fire and Burns looked a bit lackluster to me. Not one to remember for Ricky. Coming off that going into Crawford is a big ask but not impossible. Obviously Burns needs to do better than recent outings. Hopefully we'll see a fresh rejuvenated Burns on the night.
