What it says on the tin.
Had Joe Jeannette won the championship would he have defended against Jack Johnson, a man who had repeatedly demostrated his superiority over him, flooring him multiple times in their series?

Or ,would he have," forgot about his old friend"

Possibly but he would probably of made Johnson wait as long possible as he and his backers would of wanted to cash in on the title as other champions through the years had

Probably not, look how long it took the boxing establishment to let another black fighter fight for the heavyweight title

the people in charge of boxing just were not interested in having two black fighters fight for the heavyweight championship

only way i could see it happen is in a different country

The only ****** wrench in my thinking is maybe Jeannette would not have pissed off the establishment as much as Johnson did and maybe that would have made people more interested in two black fighters fighting for the title

There is no proof that the money for a title fight between Johnson and Jeannette was ever there ,it was certainly a non starter in the US.

Well, the book i'm reading contains within it multiple offers, one from Australia, one from the US and one from France.

It was actually signed for New York apparently. This, I did not know, is it common knowledge?

Yes, but Johnson did not truly want the fight. As champion Johnson could have selected any venue in the world. He simply did not want to risk his title with Jeannette. The offers were out there, some of which from well known promoters.

Johnson's singing to meet Jeanette is equivalent to Dempsey's signing to meet Wills.

    KO KIDD,

Johnson did fight another black fighter for a title shot. It was Battling Jim Johnson, and some feel Johnson escaped with a lucky draw! Read the link below, which was sent via cable to the NY Times.

I don't think Joe was a clear cut #1 in the same way Wills was.

Johnson definitely could have fought Langford or Jennette in France though. The French basically set out to strip Johnson of his title, which is weird and doesn't seem to have come off, even over there.

But he signed for the fight in NY, he agreed to the terms. But I think he saw the fight as leverage. His position was extremely complex.

I believe Johnson would have fought Jennette in NY between the time he defended against Flynn and other Johnson, yes.

Yes the French wanted to strip Johnson of his belt.

You could say both Langford and Gunboat Smith were #1's for a while. Joe was more of a #2, but most certainly worthy of a title shot, particularly after his TKO in 49 rounds over McVey.

It also turns out that Jennette's 30 round draw with McVey was a robbery. McVey admitted as much. So he was probably #1 for a little longer than we give him credit for.

Johnson signed to defend against Jeannette twice the authorities pulled the plug on both fights.I posted the details here last year.

The French Federation did strip Johnson of their version of the title in October 1913 Johnson fought Jim Johnson on the 19th of Dec 1913, and Sam Langford fought Joe Jeanette for the French Version of the title the next day.
This was not as Mendoza likes to state because the Johnson v Johnson fight was a poor one, [though owing to the champions arm being broken in the 3rd rd , it was,] but because he had not signed to fight Langford. The Federation soon reversed their decision and stripped Langford of the spurious title. Langford would probably have beaten that version of Johnson, and the one that defended against Moran, but its as well to remember that Langford dropped a decision to GunBoat Smith at the end of 1913.
