The first semi-notable opponent he ever faced (Fireman Flynn) KO him in the 1st round. then he went 1-2-2 vs Meehan. He ducked all the best fighters - Wills Langford Greb etc. Got 2 whippings from the also overrated Tunney.

He had some decent wins - Gibbons, Flynn, Brennan, Fulton - but he is not more substance than he is myth. Definitely not a top 10 HW and not a top 40 p4p fighter.

He was very good, especially for his time. The pace that he set had n't been seen in the heavyweight ranks prior to his arrival on the scene. Speed, aggression and power. Almost like an early Mike Tyson. I would n't say that he's in the all time top 5 list of heavies, but definitely between 10 - 15.

Why do the same people think Tyson was so good? after Douglas whipped him he was just a mediocre fighter, then after going in and out of the slammer, he was beaten up by tomato cans, McBride and Williams...
Dempsey ranks higher among all time greats ahead of Tyson.
Hell Tyson ranks lower in his own era than Lewis and Holyfield, 2 guys that beat and stopped him, lol..

Tyson in 96 and in 2002 to 2005 was not the phenom from 1988.
Holyfield would have gotten flattened before the prison term,
Lewis waited till Mike was shot, and Lennox was scared the whole fight.
Lets not pretend that even in 96 Tyson could have still beat anyone on a
great night. Anyway the world was such a different place in one way
in Dempseys era, in another way human nature always remains the same.
But Dempsey really epitomized his era the roaring 20's. Swagger, deadly
    swagger.

He brutally defeated the giant Jess Willard in a manner that was pretty much unheard of at the time with fights typically going for much longer distances and was ruthless with his opponents including his battle with Firpo when they smashed each other all over, and even out of the ring. He was viewed as "Jack the giant-killer" by the public and like all sportsmen who thrill, was loved and admired by all. History gives us the luxury of being able to compare him with the best of the last 100 years and raise the question of those he did not fight. For me, he was a great fighter from a great era and it took another great, with a great fighting style of his own to beat him.

At his best Dempsey combined grit, nice speed, and quite good power and/or attrition (as the case demanded). He sometimes won spectacularly, and also hung in there and prevailed in some tough fights. You'll have to form your own opinions of whether that constitutes a sort of greatness.

Depends upon your definition of good!

Even the worst lineal champion is prety darn good.

One who dominates a definable era is great.

stevo1966 pointed out that the manner in which he destroyed Jess Willard was prety much unheard of at the time.

I would suggest that it is prety much unheard of since!

How many cases do we have of a 190lb fighter beating a genuinely world class superheavyweight, much less a champion, or destroying them so comprehensivley?

No this ain't Elroy's MO. He would say dempsey sucks because his Vo2 max isn't as high as guys today, and he doesn't have rippling man muscles.
Followed by a sam peter and or david haye destroy him within 30 seconds of the bell.

He got schooled by former WW in Willie Meehan.

We would be on fairly safe ground saying that he was the most destructive fighter under 190lbs, that there has ever been.
