Top level sport is far, far tougher now than it has ever been.

I agree a lot of top level sports are tougher but the fights were longer then so how is a 12 round fight tougher than a fifteen round fight ?

I think a lot of boxing coaches do not fully understand some methods behind S&C programmes.. I think knowing the reasons why to do certain exercises. A good example is most boxers run 5 miles + a day.. Looking from a S&C point of view and linking it with boxing it makes no sense.. Boxers do 3 minute rounds with 1 minute break. The optimum method of training would be to mirror that in training.. It's a S&C coaches job to try and tie activities into that.. All exercises should be sport specific!! I would focus less on miles and more on HIT.. Hill runs and sprints are much more sport specific to boxing!! Now some boxing coaches may understand that but would struggle with oxygenisation levels and how hard and fast to push the boxer in order to push the boxer not to hit the wall during a fight..

Totally agree training should be mirrored to how you fight with sprints etc timed to three minute flat out burst with thirty second rest then go again why could a boxing coach not tell you this tho they no more about fighting than s and c coaches obviously

Yes some of the stuff is common sense. But for a more scientific approach some S &C coaches can help with that.. Understanding how the anatomy works is a big bonus. The problem I have with a lot of S&C coaches is that they standardise a lot of the stuff they do and don't go Sport specific. If you have one doing that then the boxers are wasting there time.. Every programme should be sport specific and even fighter specific.. For example Ricky Burns shouldn't be doing the same training as someone like John Simpson as both fight differently.. It's interesting to see that some people don't like the idea of these coaches and I think it's the same as everything the bad ones spoil it for the good ones ..

I totally disagree with some comments on here, I would be positive that for instance that all of the top fightersn in the UK run upwards of 6 mile at least 6 days a week, there aware of the importance of strength in the legs when sparring and fighting, it's so obvious to myself the ones who don't run, they stand out a mile in the gym.

If running 6 miles a day 6 days a week is purely a boxers only cardio, then there in trouble as others have stated boxing is 3 minutes sprint, 1 minute rest. But, you shouldn't run purely for fitness, as Billy stated if you run 6 days a week your legs become much stronger for when you fight/spar, I did a bit of sparring (If you can call it sparring ) and run a lot and managed to do about 4 rounds the first time before my legs turned to jelly, if I didn't go running often and run upto 10 miles at a time I very much doubt I'd have been able to do 2 rounds, I think it's about finding the mixture between running 6 times a week to strengthen your legs and also your explosive fast twitch stuff which is boxing specific.

Yeah that's exactly right you need to mix the long steady runs with the fast explosive stuff it is all relevant but you don't need a s and c coach to tell you this stuff your trainer should no it it's only become a trend because of ariza on the twenty four seven shows

Your trainer isnt necessarily going to know the science behind techniques though so like anyone they might be able to come up with exercises themselves that relate to boxing but someone specialised in the physical aspects of science could tweak exercises or routines and introduce a different diet specific routine. There are lots of advantages to having a knowledgable team around you.

Also someone else, who you can trust, taking over parts of training allows you more time to focus on game plan/strategy and other aspects of fight camp.

Living in the dark ages on training methods but contrastingly using modern day technology.

It was also said in jest pal but with some truth behind it.

Whilst I agree in "old school training" for boxing, I also agree that technology has moved so fast since back in the day that there are better ways of doing things now, SOMETIMES.

I think the biggest factor in some of the new methods of training that a good S&C coach would adopt is that there is far less risk of injury in training certain muscle groups. I think this is the key part here. It's all about risk of injury and keeping it to a minimum.

Yes but having this big team pushing you in different directions can be a problem I'm all for listening and learning off others but I think it's non sense people like the idea of the sound of s and c coaches 15round greats didn't need them does mayweather use them?
