Gary Cornish changes coach

At the weekend I was speaking with Laurie Redfearn who coached Gary from day one and I was surprised to hear that he was no longer coaching big Gary.

Gary has now decided to have his strength and conditioning coach Paul Geddes take control of all aspects of his training. I really can't remember Paul boxing but I know he has been instrumental with the conditioning of all amateur and professional boxers at Inverness City boxing club for the last few years.

I just wonder if it was a wise choice to get rid of a coach who has a wealth of experience with over 50 years in boxing? I just think when the going gets tough for Gary he might miss the added experience that Laurie would bring to the party?

I've seen Paul at a couple of the professional shows and I'm sure he will have picked up experience during this time but I'd just like hear what other people think of Gary's decision?

 

I think Cornish needs to go to a more experienced pro trainer, in a place where he will get regular quality sparring. Without doing that I fear he won't go very far at all, given his lack of amateur experience and poor match making.

 

That doesn't sound like a good move.

 

I don't think he is too keen on giving up his job.. I would like to see Gary out training with the Fury's. He would get good Quality sparring and Peter really knows his stuff.

 

Any word on Cornish stepping up? 17 fights in I think it's time faces a domestic or European level guy.

 

What does he work as?

 

I think he's a joiner or a builder but from what I hear he does quite well outside of boxing

 

That's fair enough but in that case he will never reach the top.

Maybe he knows this and that's why he doesn't want to give up the steady income? Guess it's a risk.

I would never judge a man when it comes to life changing financial decisions that's for sure.

 

I remember reading an article where gary said he has to travel down south to England or overseas to get good sparring, he dosent do that all the time tho, I think he should consider moving out of inverness and moving down south fulltime, as somebody else said hooking up with peter fury would be great for him, top class sparring all the time, and having a guy like peter in his corner would be really good for him.

 

Living in Inverness I know that Gary is based too far north to get enough decent sparring.

He needs to decide which career he wants to give 100% focus and if he decides on boxing then he really needs to consider a move south.

 

I haven't been impressed with Cornish really. I agree though, he needs to move south to improve his skills.
