But you get the idea he has more heavy punches, he is the bigger man between the two. It's true Holyfield was more busy and punched more but I think mercer punches slightly harder And his jab would probably rip Foreman's face up, i think that the foreman vs briggs would probably lose a sd vs mercer
I know this is a old thread but I just joined up. Anyway it is hilarious when people will bring up fights where Foreman took a person lightly and struggled a bit or when Foreman didn't know somebody out you people make it seem like a sin. Foreman landed more punches than Alex Schulz. I think he landed about 280 punches in that bout. But he isn't busy right? Then what do you call Wlad or Vitali Klitcshko or even guys lik Mayweather or Canelo Alavarz when he fought Austin Trout or Mayweather? Foreman didn't have a punishing jab? His jab forced you back. He did this to anybody he hit with it. Who did Liston move with his jab? 180 pound fighters? But wait you heard he had a great jab so you believe it right? Holmes only had a jab so he threw it all the time, Foreman had other punches. Mercer destroyed Morrison? No Tommy gassed himself out and got caught with some great punches to stop him. Before that Morrison battered Mercer around the ring. Morrison fought a smart fight against Foreman, he got in and got out. Also according to people who knew George he was so busy with commercials and trying to get that sitcom that he didn't train hard for Morrison at all. Cooper took Mercer the distance and got stopped in 2 by Foreman. Holyfield t-d off against Foreman and couldn't drop him yet he was able to drop Mercer. Foreman struggled against Alex Stewart? Foreman knocked him down 2 times in the second round but as real boxing fans know Foreman in his comeback would always try to ask the ref to stop the fight when he had a person hurt. In his case it came back to bite him in the butt. Alex was a slow starter and the longer the fight went the tougher he got. Just look at his Holyfield fights. Anyway a in shape Foreman of any age would always batter and TKO Mercer. Mercer didn't have a great defense. He wasn't a runner and talk about poor stamina he was far worse than Foreman. Also it is funny for a site of so called boxing fans you people for the most part just repeat the same thing over and over and over. We get it. Foreman got tired in 2 fights in this prime so he had the worse stamina in boxing history right? Ken Norton had a glass chin because he was stopped 4 times but I never seen anybody say Jesery Joe Walcott had a glass chin because he was stopped 6 times. But if you said he had a glass chin it would just show how overraed Marciano was.
Lol right a troll because I typed in Mercer vs Foreman in my browser and this site came up so I decided to join. And because I just joined I can't make a comment about a old thread? Then delete the thread then...how about that.
Mercer beats the hell out of him but loses on the cards in a dubious decision nobody cares about because Tyson just got out of jail. Old Foreman carries the Lineal Title onward, "I'm not ducking anybody, they ducking me!"
If George comes in this fight in good shape he wins a decision:deal I don't see any knockdowns or anyone getting stopped here..
This is around the time World Beater Axel Schlitzgay put a little beating on zee "Lineal" champion eff zee vorld. Yeah, Mercer would peck away at Foreman for the duration of the bout. Foreman was letting unranked pretenders have their way with him during the mid 90's.
Right Alex Schulz put a beating on Foreman even though Foreman landed more punches? Not bright are you? Foreman's face swelled up a lot in his comeback. It had nothing to do with Alex. Did his face swell up like that against Holyfield for example? Nope. Foreman was getting unranked who beat him? Lol you mean Alex Stewart a guy he let off the hook after he knocked him down? Well Holyfield struggled with him too. Morrison was unranked? Morrison was a huge puncher who according to people who faced him, Lennox Lewis and Tyson said Morrison punched a lot harder. Morrison fought smart and ran all the fight. Yeah that is sure Foreman getting beat up isn't it? Mercer lost to Jesse Ferguson for crying out loud. Struggled like hell with Bert Cooper. as knocked down by Holyfield. Struggled like hell with Francesco Damiani until Damiani quit. Mercer's whole career is based on Tommy Morrison gassing himself out against him and his close fight with Lennox Lewis. If Foreman came in to the fight in shape and took Mercer seriously (Foreman didn't need to beat somebody like Mercer) he stops him. If Holyfield could drop him then Foreman would knock him out The Foreman who fought Holyfield would of stopped him even quicker. Not to mention a prime Foreman
Mercer took a great shot and that is a problem for George. Except Foreman had uncommon power. Not the type of fighter you want to stand in front of and take punches full force from. I do think Ray developed a good jab and some pretty good skills by the mid 90s. He may be too busy for Foreman. Damn..tough call. Could honestly go either way. Foreman had wrecking balls in his gloves and there is a reason sane human being ran like hell from him. It` no myth. George`s power was for real. I`d lean Mercer on points after climbing up off the canvas.
Interesting match IMO Foreman KO's Mercer mid to late, Mercer had some whiskers for certain but he was technically limited. Foreman loads up on hooks and uppercuts and cracks Rays Kevlar chin. Ray would have to get past Foreman's grappling and pushing to be effective not to mention that poleaxe of a jab.
He didn't , when they fought with in 95, Holyfield beat his ass, and you could tell Holys punches were hurting Ray a lot more than vice versa, Holyfield had him on the floor, and could have finished him but he let off the gas...
Very good analysis Mr. Magoo. You need to upgrade to nomenclature to Caps! Both had an iron chin. It also depends which Mercer shows up. Does nayone think that despite all the credit that goes to Holmes, that Mercer fought as weell that night as against Lewis?
Foreman was way to slow at this stage......... Questionable chin fighters like Saverse-Stewart-Morrison-Briggs-Schultz went the distance aka he could not put a dent in them despite some of them stood right in front of him. First of all Foreman would never fight Mercer, way to much risk and no reward. A in shape Mercer is a formidable opponent, good jab, chin , above average boxing skills and ring IQ, decent not great power. Anyway, Mercer takes this with relative easy, he would beat George to the punch all day long and would give him just enough movement that he never could reset. BTw, for the resident idiots..........Mercer did win a Olympic medal and had a good amateaur career, so actually he knew how to box..............and he took a knee against Holyfield to clear the webs but Holy thru the entire fight was never ever in danger stopping Mercer, as a matter of fact if Holyfield would have not stepped on the gas in the second half he would have lost a decision. Mercer was hot and cold but if you got him on a good night you had to bring your A game and be in your prime and not some Arum recycled fossil trying to cash out.
