As a kid i remember boxing on sportsnight..Mason Bruno Minter etc..i also remember listening to regular wednesday night radio commentary on fights....Minter, Magri,Dave Green ,Kaylor,Sibson etc... what do people think caused all that to end ?...do you think it could ever return ?

it's been so raped and damaged, splintered with weight divisions and sanctioning bodies, more less replaced by UFC and even before that fell out of favour among the main. it will NEVER return, it's been dead for years and just waiting burial. it's only die hard fans that follow, and MOST of the time thats hard for even us because of far too many sub par fighters and WORSE the Hype pish they try sell us off with, as if we don't know what a TRUE Top man is. in short it stinks!
Its always been dying, going long stretches being illegal, enforcing color lines, being entirely mob controllrd. It is now at its best possible moment.
Boxing is not dead especially in view of all the money it continues to generate. Sadly, it is the elites of the sport (its promoters & networks) who are piling the money into their accounts along with only a handful of superstars joining in on the goldmine. As for why it is not as popular in the USA it's simply because American boxers no longer dominate it. The sport is no longer presented in popular or accessible venues such as Yankee Stadium, Ebbets Field, Comiskey Park. Instead it is almost exclusively presented in elite venues such as in Las Vegas and casinos. Further, it is no longer presented on weekly TV shows as it was in the days when we these on CBS or ABC.
No more free tv, especially in world title fights, **** back in the 70's Ali was in a title fight about 3 times a year... The end of 15 round fight's... To many guy's these days juicing , using roids, and peds, back in the 60's and 70's boxers just trained on vitamins, steak and eggs, and they were tougher harder men, who make the guys of today look like wimps.... Fights these days are stopped too soon, or when a guy is barely hurt or cut, back 30 or 40 years ago, guy's fought until they couldn't stand up anymore:deal Too much corruption, and everything today is about the almighty dollar, back in the old days it was all about legacy and PRIDE!!, now guy's just pad their records against bums and tomato cans, because they are scared to lose.. The last great decade of boxing was in the 80's....:deal
It's fallen from favour as a mainstream sport sure, but it's a long way from dead. It'll never be what it once was, but I think there could be a couple of resurgences here and there. An exciting heavyweight division would be a good start. (Mainstream sports fans always follow the heavies)
While agreeing with many of the above responses, I myself think that people nowadays have more past times to choose from... My $0.02
All good points so far. I would also vouch (to a lesser extent) that this ludicrously PC world in which we live (at least in the UK), plus the movements to reduce animal cruelty and make the world "a greener place" has made the average bystander look upon boxing as more barbaric than usual. We've all gone a bit soft on this side of the pond.
Hah! I was in a dive bar last night talking with a friend (who is also a boxing nut)... There was a replay of some Friday Night Fights action on the TV with the sound down.. a hip young couple comes to bar to order and HE says, "That's just barbaric. I don't understand how they think that good to play at an establishment"... It damn near put me off my feed. What have we become?
