The list of words and phrases that now (apparently) "may cause offence" is really quite something. Along these lines of thinking it's not at all strange that people view boxing as barbaric.

The Right to Be Offended has supplanted freedom of religion and the right to congregate in the US.

And that is the way it should be to a degree. But offence is not the issue as Stephen Fry points out:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-IX69mjpcA

The justification for boxing in a civilized world, was and is in part the 'general' lack of discrimination due to faith. It was the sport of the atheist, the sport of in the unoffended.

I'll check out the vid later but there is a distinction between justifiable offense and the sort of mental distortions of modern academia and the modern political scene. The concepts of scale an proportion are completely lost in thr pornography of whining. There is no end game but the exhaltation of weak egos. **** those people.

That is basically what the video is saying, indeed with the terms 'Whining' and '**** those people', you could be quoting from the video...

The absolute pinnacle will be reached when Wladimir Klitschko defends his crown against number one contender and legend Alex Leapai in the fight of this century.

Will you be able to tell your grandchildren that you watched the titanic struggle as it unfolded?

Is Leapai really as bad as Firpo? Firpo is one of the worst filmed heavyweights I have ever seen. He does nothing right and he lacks any incredible physical gifts in comparison to even decent modern heavies.

Firpo had just beaten Weinert a clever boxer ,comebacking Jess Willard ,and held a win over Bill Brennan, that's a better resume than Leapai who has just Boytsov on his ledger ,and at 34 is unlikely to improve.

Remind me again, what were Boytsov's biggest wins? Would it be over 38years old trial horses Guinn ,and 39years old Wilson?

Boytsov is a manufactured , protected , over hyped journeyman level boxer , and he is the only name on Leapai's record!

The whole division is **** right now.. And there's no getting around it. I know it sounds like the same old tired rhetoric that some of us have been ranting for the past 8-10 years, but I think now its truly become a reality. And making comparisons like " was it really as bad when Ali lost to Leon Spinks and fought Alfredo Evangelista?" won't help matters.. Sure there are better challengers than Alex Leapai, but does it really matter? Would you honestly stop what you're doing and park your arse in front of the TV to watch Wlad fight Pulev, Fury, or Adamek? Unless you're under the age of 27 or live in Chernobyl, one can't possibly consider this an exciting era of heavyweight boxing..

It still is as popular as it once was in America in other countries. I was looking up boxing ratings around the globe recently and tried to compile the data into one word document. Apparently Acelino Freitas' wedding did 55 million viewers in Brazil but I can't find the viewing figures for his fights there, which are reputed to be massive.
