Conditioning Coaches are now virtually a prerequisite for any top gym in combat sports. They are more prevalent in MMA for obvious reasons but boxers are now seeing the benefits of a good fitness coach who works behind science not old school repetition "more is best" style gym work.

Conditioning coaches generally fall into one or both categories:

    Strength & Conditioning and Nutritionists

Mike Dolce is one of the best known nutritionists in the world, he has about 6-7 full time clients, who he advises on dietician programs in relation to making weight. They are all world class MMA fighters. He also is a keen S & C guru but to my knowledge he deals only in dieting for his fighters.

Well worth 5 or 10% of a fighters purse! These guys can prolong careers by 5 years or more in some cases.

Extracting the most from the body relevant to a sport and having a fighters spirit are two different things.

    Wrong!

Very wrong! A good S&C coach measures his clients progress and quantifies the results to ensure weight is met and optimum physical performance is as close as can be come fight night.

Tommy Hearns was infamously over trained by one of the most experienced and talented coaches in the game, at the very highest level. Boxing coaches are boxing experts, not sports science experts, well ………………. most anyway

And people's bodies react differently a good S&C coach should recognise what's working better and what;s not and adjust accordingly.

IMO I think nutrition is a big part, the cleaner healthier most nutritional food will ensure your body has the right fuel pre and post workouts and recovery is also very important.

They do this by qualifying results. Isn't that what I said?

Tommy hearns was a three weight world champion who kept his power through the weights that over training done him loads of harm

I still see S&C coaches as a fad. If MMA cleans up its rampant PED use problem there won't be much room left for a lot of these "S&C" guys.

Have you ever practiced MMA or any of the disciplines involved? and have you ever had the use of a good conditioning coach?

    Just wondering

Tommy Hearns was competing against other guys that trained much the same, if not worse, than him. He also had a huge amount of skill and genetic physical advantages over his opponents.

Conditioning is a huge factor in boxing, fitter fighters can, and often do, beat better skilled fighters.

Jesse Owens is considered one of the best athletes ever, his training methods would now be considered primitive, but he was competing against others using similar methods.

If he was about today and failed to adapt to sports science and kept doing what he did then His 10.2 second gold winning, 100meter world record would see him come in last at all recent Olympic Games and the last time it would have been good enough to take a gold would be about 35 years ago!
