Road ware! It happens to all fighter around 38. Most dont even make it to that age before they just dont have the ability to make weight or train like they used to.

Yes he did! Louis was still sharp around this time. Just not sharp enough.

I think Gerry Cooney would have been a tough opponent for Marciano.

Louis lost 12 and 13 rounds on two of the three score cards .. the overwhelming reviews were that he was embarrassed .. this is what you consider a good go ?

Of course Marciano faced a plethora of giant hard hitting hookers (in a world class sense). Guys with decent hooks, like Moore and Walcott and Charles, hurt him or put him down. So, what could lil' ol' Gerrie do but be an oversized Matthews?

Very well spoken! Considering I wouldnt give Gerrie a chance in hell to beat Moore, Wolcott, or Charles.

The universe, like myself, looks upon your "giving of chances" with profound disinterest…. if it notices at all.

And the universe would show just as little interest if you could spell all the fighters' names correctly.

At 6'7", 225 lbs, with tremendous power and the tendency to start off fast, Gerry Cooney could have given Rocky Marciano some problems. Sure we all know. Cooney fizzled every time he stepped up, while Rocky was a top three all time great who survived adversity on plenty of occasions. But I think styles make fights, and Marciano had virtually nothing in common with the greats who beat Gerry, two of which did it when he was inactive. Marciano would be dealing with a vast size difference, and would get hit with shots that were much harder than anything he'd ever been tagged with before. Cooney's hook to the body and head is something that I think could land often with Rocky's come forward and bobbing and weaving style.. At the end, I think Marciano breaks him down for the stoppage as Gerry's stamina and mental resolve would eventually fail him. But it ain't happening in no five or six rounds with a one sided beat down. Cooney is going to have his moments and might even have Rocky on the canvas once or twice. He's certainly going to bring more to the table with his size, power, style and early round tenacity than Don Cokell or Roland Lastarza did.

I could definitely see this. Either way Rocky would have his hands full with this big boy. I believe Marciano pulls through with a win but I agree its not happening in 5 or 6 rounds.

Tyson, through no fault of Marciano's.

I watched Gerry fight many times since he won the middleweight golden gloves in NY and saw him get TKO'd as a light heavyweight vs Johnny Davis. I saw many of his pro fights, early & later Gerry had a tremendous left hook to the head and body and good size, it would be an interesting fight and probably exciting. However if there was one criticism I would say about Gerry is that he was frail, he had heart and a freakish left side of his body but his right side and legs were lacking. He was a 6'6 middleweight southpaw and a 6'6 Light heavyweight and a 6'6 pro ...I would assume that his height and hook could offer some problems for Marciano and anybody but despite his size his frailness would betray him. I like your analogy of the fight and agree that Marciano could hit the floor but prevail

funny but although the Wacko Twins did a good job keeping Gerry undefeated for the big money fight IMO if they put more time into getting fights against the likes of Tex Cobb and other durable guys to gain confidence and endurance it may have served his pro career better.

Gerry's brother Tom (I saw win Heavyweight gloves) had a cocaine problem and there were rumors that Gerry was in a rehab between the Lyle & Norton fights. Also friends I know who owned bars in NY said Gerry would drink & powder his nose often so the Wackos may have wanted to cash in on his. I thought featherweight Victor Valle did a good job on the training teaching part

Both guys are overrated but Marciano is far more overrated. Tyson's competition was much better
