Rocky Marciano is perhaps the most overrated HW aside from the Klitschkos. Overrated doesnt mean bad, it means that people give him more praise than he deserves. Being 49-0 in itself does not make you an all time great - just ask Brian Nielsen.

Let's look at Marciano's so-called "impressive" wins.

1) Joe Louis - in his prime, Joe Louis was one of the baddest dudes in boxing. But he had to take this fight because of IRS problems, and was a shell of his former self. The Joe Louis that KO Schmeling in one round would have beaten Rocky easy. This is not a win that makes someone into an all time great boxer.

2) Jersey Joe Walcott (x2) - Jersey Joe's two fights vs Rocky were the last two of his career - he was a washed up fighter at this point. 38 years old. He had already been in crazy fights with Louis and Charles, so beating up an old man past his prime is not impressive - especially considering the whooping that Rocky took in the first fight before the blind squirrel found an acorn and knocked out Jersey Joe

3) Roland LaStarza - had a padded record just like Rocky. Not impressive

4) Ezzard Charles - already been in tough fights with Louis and Walcott, way past his best and had over 100 fights. Rocky was too concerned with keeping his "0" so he only fought 49 times in an era where the best were good enough to keep going. And Rocky still struggled to beat this old man. twice

5) Archie Moore - was an old geezer (38 or 39) by the time he got to Rocky. Is it impressive for a supposedly "all time great" to beat an old man with 19 losses at the time, who had already been through countless beatings? No

Rocky promptly retired after beating Moore because he knew Sonny Liston was gonna come and beat the hell out of him.

I know certain people have prepared foolish arguments to defend Rocky's farce of a career, and I will dismantle them right now.

1) Rocky is 49-0 can't argue with that - Actually, yes you can. Fighting 49 bums/old people and winning is not impressive. Nielsen was 49-0 at one point. Joe Calzaghe was 46-0 (actually 45-1 cuz he got a terrible gift vs Hopkins). Padded records are meaningless. There is no undefeated fighter that is worthy of a top 35 p4p ranking (Mayweather is the best undefeated fighter - and he definitely does not deserve a spot in the top 35). Rocky is no different, and he is not a top 15 HW all time and not a top 50 p4p boxer all time. If Pinklon Thomas retired after beating Mike Weaver, he would have been undefeated - would you consider that to be the mark of an all time great? No

2) Rocky was so tough/had a great chin - Saying someone is tough is just another way of saying they are good at taking a beating. Just like he took a beating vs Walcott before becoming a blind squirrel that stumbled upon an acorn in the form of a KO. David Tua and Oliver McCall had great chins, but they were not all time greats.

3) Well there is no other HW champ that was undefeated - well Rocky fought bums and the great HW champs of all time didn't. Thats the difference. Rocky never fought someone on the level of Dempsey, Jack Johnson, prime Joe Louis, Ali, Frazier, Foreman, Norton, or even guys like Jimmy Young or Earnie Shavers. weak competition does not = greatness. And so what if he was champ? He only had 6 title defenses.

All these HWs in NO PARTICULAR ORDER are better than Rocky the Bum Marciano

1. Ali
2. Frazier
3. Foreman
4. Holmes
5. Jack Johnson
6. Bowe
7. Holyfield
8. Lennox
9. Joe Louis
10. Tyson
11. Dempsey
12. Tunney
13. Sonny Liston
14. Harry Wills
15. Sam Langford

What has been written is IRREFUTABLE, UNDENIABLE, INCONTESTABLE, INDISPUTABLE, NONSUBJECTIVE, flawless FACT. Not opinion. I challenge any human being on earth to try and disprove the magnanimous insights of wisdom that I have been presented. Unfortunately for Rocky fans, it is impossible to disagree with these statements without demonstrating one's own incompetence and ignorance, much like Rocky demonstrated his incompetence in barely beating old people like Charles and Walcott.

You don't know jack....

Sir Bert Cooper should be #1 on your garbage list.

Bertram Cooper (born January 10, 1966), also known as Sir Smokin Bert Cooper is a heavyweight boxer, most famous for his devastating punching power and several wild brawls in the 1990s. The African American son of British boxing legend Sir Henry Cooper may not have got his father's looks but he did inherit his powerful left hook.
Cooper came out of Philadelphia and was trained in his early years by ex-champs Joe Frazier, and his father, and rose in the rankings with a series of explosive knockouts in the Cruiserweight division despite being a natural welter weight when not training. He hit the great Orlin Norris so hard it damaged his knee and marked Cooper as a man to be feared.Cooper vowed only to fight Heavyweights from that moment on and still pulled his punches out of fear of killing again.
He faced many legends such as Ray Mercer, George Foreman, Riddick Bowe, Michael Moorer, Chris Byrd, Derrick Jefferson, Corrie Sanders, Evander Holyfield, and Gabe Brown. All these fighters have been quoted as crediting him as the hardest puncher they ever faced. Holyfield specifically went into great detail in a Ring Magazine interivew, "Tyson was all arms and elbows, he could hurt you but Bert Cooper could kill you. I was lucky he held back when he fought me, but he could still kill you without trying, that's how hard he hit."
The greatest victory of Cooper's career came when he KOed Ring #4 Joe Savage in 1994, putting him in line for a title shot. However, Don King told Cooper he would have to wait as Tyson was getting out of prision. The plan was for Tyson to unify the titles and defend the undisputed Championship against Cooper. But. Mike Tyson was quoted as tellling Don King, "**** that, you fight him if you love him so much, ******. " Not fighting the entire year, Cooper campaigned vigorously for a title fight with Tyson in 1996, calling him out on ESPN with vicious improvised raps. All was in vain, however, as Tyson faced Holyfield instead.
Holyfield refused to give the aging Cooper a rematch and Cooper accepted his lot in life as a gate keeper. Allowing younger potential superstars to beat him and add his legendary name to their resumes. Cooper was finally knighted in 1999 by the Queen for his Human Rights work and legendary career. He is currenlty the first and only African American to be knighted. Sir Bert Cooper currently tours the world with his hip hip/jazz fusion band, the Funky Left Hook Express occassionally calling out the Klitschko Brothers, who live in fear of his return.

Sir Bert Cooper who also acquired the title of "count" from the prince of monoco after his stellar knockout of Rick Hoard in 1990, was certainly a remarkable warrior, and very overrated....

But he doesn't quite match up to my man Chuck " the Bayonne Bleeder" wepner.. This was an ATG who retired Sonny Liston, Thrashed Earnie Terrell, Schooled a green Foreman, put Muhammad Ali on ***** street, and sent Randy Newman into referring. Its no wonder that one of the greatest movies of all time was inspired by his untouchable legacy.

Wepner certainly got robbed on the cards against Ali. I hate everytime I go to boxrec, it still says "TKO 15" That is an oxymoron. If 15 rounds were completed you go to the cards like any other damn fight. Wepner lasted the distance, he scored a knockdown, what more could he have done? The fix was in.

"Raging Bull" Absolutely was inspired by Wepner.

Klitschkos overrated? :rofl

I don't understand how they can be overrated when they are constantly bashed by the boxing press and people on forums such as yourself... Yeah they sure as hell get a ton of love from people like Kellerman, very overrated fighters!

Marciano I agree is EXTREMELY overrated though, he beat a bunch of cabdrivers and old over the hill greats.

LaStarza had an excellent amateur pedigree and barely lost a fight.

The Rock over came his high level of skill and crushed him , much like he did to the other 45.

No relevance. And he overcame the other opponents because they were weak. Only 7 title fights and all of those opponents were either washed up, past their prime, or not good in the first place.

I read a fair and seemingly well written book on his career...he seemed to arrive in the big time when other top guys had gone over the hill and not much in the way of young talent was peaking...so there was a void which he filled.
He overcame limited technical ability with toughness and tremendous fitness.
He rode his luck then quit as he felt his manager was ripping him off and he didnt want to be exploited anymore...the tale seemed genuine...i dont know who would have been next in line to fight him..i dont remember Liston being mentioned..was Liston not in prison at this point ? I"m not sure ? Liston didnt become a top contender for another 2 or 3 years i think ?
I got the impression Marciano wouldnt have feared anybody..and would have fought anybody if the money was right.
Basically he dominated a weak post Louis era...and the last era before the bigger heavys came through.
Whatever anybody thinks he could only beat the people around him.
Finally let me categorically assure you...NOBODY wins 49 fights by being a bum..!

All that was in line for Marciano when he retired was Bob baker or a rematch with Archie Moore.

Moore had already knocked out Baker so that was a dead duck. Number 3 was hurricane Jackson who had already been knocked out by valdes. Valdes himself lost to baker then satterfeild. Satterfeild never could win more than a fight or two without losing so he was a dead duck.

Rocky needed a fight that summer but nobody looked worthy enough to fill a ballpark.

There were younger untested fighters coming through but they all needed to establish themselves over another year or two to catch on as worthy contenders. Kids like pastrano, machen, Johansson, young Jack johnson (This group did not include Liston or Patterson. Floyd was still 170lb and nobody knew who Liston was until 1959) but Rocky could not wait inactive that long so he retired.

Once marciano retired Jackson and Archie Moore looked the best two heavyweights. By then Moore had continued winning and Jackson had beat Baker too. Then, out of the blue, with Marciano long gone, #1 lightheavyweight contender Patterson moved up to heavyweight and beat both.
