Have you ever been in a "Fighter A vs Fighter B" thread, and you felt like you were getting tons of good feedback and analysis and you were learning and enjoying the conversation...and then all of a sudden someone comes and says something like "Fighter A is a bum, Fighter B beats him", only to be followed by someone else saying "Yes, you are right", or "No, Fighter B is better and you U R stupid."? At that point the entire thread unravels right then and there and now we are locked into a match of who is the most childish. Well, my solution is a simple one. If you cannot flesh out your thoughts in at least a small paragraph, then that usually means you do not either: A. Any real interest in the discussion, or B. any real knowledge to share. In either case it is a waste of time and space to post your single sentence that has no audience and no desire to be understood. You are simply just throwing something out there, usually bait to have a troll war. I want to enjoy conversation that I can go back over when things get slow and read up on all the good things shared. If I see a thread with 11 pages I usually end of up thinking that it turned into a massive war that someone with no real interest in furthering the discussion started. Thoughts?
Without sounding confrontational or disrespectful, l don't see the necessity to start a whole thread about "posting edicate". Regardless of what a person has to offer in a discussion, there is still the element of free speech and while sometimes I wish I could revoke that right from certain individuals, its just as easy to ignore.
Freedom of Speech. I agree and thank you for the response, but I have had my threads deleted by moderators, we do not have the ability to post avatars, and guy have been banned for being troublemakers. I do not agree with any of that. Guys should not be banned for normal trolling, and threads should not be deleted if they have to do with boxing even if the subject is repetitive, and avatars should be allow if they are not offensive but, they it is not the way it is. I am not surprized that the other two on this thread the way they did. They are more concerned with being funny and ruining a conversation than adding anything contructive to the conversation. I am talking about getting the best out of each boxing fan that comes here. I am talking about self-improvement and self-policing. Hopefully removing some of the misplace arrogance around here and replacing it with good boxing conversation. I do not expect to get much in the way of agreement. I might possibly get this thread deleted a/o banned but I wanted to get this thought out there and hopeful encourage guys to give more in the way of Reason for their oppinions. That does not seems to be asking too much. BTW, Fighter A does not have enough defense to deal with Fighter B's speed.
Just a tip.. The best way to get rid of a troll is to starve them. Constructing a thread asking a troll to change his behavior is feeding them.
Thank you for the tip. I do not subscribe completely to the ignore option. I first like to identify a problem and see if there is anyone out there who has dealt with this specific issue or was simply bothered by it like I am. If so, then I like to gather thoughts on the best way to approach a situation. Choosing to only ignoring a problem as the first option leans to much on the side of consenting with it or worst, being afraid to confront it. Not that you are saying that but, sometimes that is a by- product and the site suffers because there is no unity amongst the members of what is acceptable. Now, I will ignore only, after mulitple efforts to reach some common ground with the offending person falls on deaf ears. I think the best way to get rid of a troll or solve a problem is to highlight them/it for the rest of the community and make it uncomfortable for them/it to be here. Once they/it realizes that a site is airtight and trolling gets them attention that makes them look folish, they usually find a way out of the site, like a fighter that wants to quit in the ring and resorts to fouling. Thanks for the tip.
I must have missed the solution part of it in this post. I see no such thing. I might agree with you in theory, but you're always going to have that element here. Not in ALL forums, I've noticed, but this is a boxing forum, inhabited by a lot of males, many young, some teenagers. We all know what trouble a lot of them like to start. Unless the mods decide not to tolerate that kind of thing (hah), we're stuck with it as is. Or just have me continually post in threads. THAT'S the real thread killer, and a much more centralized target.
About six or seven years ago, I used to get hammered and use this forum as a venting outlet for my frustrations. Nothing better than randomly telling a know-it-all that he's full of ****, even if he's dead on balls right. Don't know if that was trolling, but it sure felt good back then. Today, this is just a way to pass time at work and catch up on commentary with all the fights I don't watch, and as I get older the more I tend to miss. BTW, unless I am blind, it looks like they got rid of the lounge. Haven't been here much over the past year. That's a shame that was a great place to hang out and talk about everything from business, politics, music, other sports, ***, etc.etc.etc.. I used to frequent the lounge a lot back in the day and remember when john Thomas, Dopelganger and myself would have avatars containing naked women. ahhhh.. The good old days.
I did always like the avatars you guys had. Funny how such a simple thing makes a forum more interesting.
Incidentally, ( and now that I am on a roll) I don't know why so many rules and restrictions were put on this place. This is a forum frequented primarily by young to middle aged men who enjoy watching a contact sport. Posting risque pictures, using foul language and engaging in other conversational edicate is natural with the territory. I suspect it had to do with certain individuals constantly whining and complaining about the fact that they felt it was "indecent" and that children sometimes log onto these forums.. My counter argument with that, is PARENTS need to monitor what sites their kids are visiting.. The internet is a public forum and an outlet for free speech and expression.. The rest of us shouldn't have been made to suffer for someone's distaste in the elements. If you don't like it, go somewhere else and put a block on your computer for certain sites.
We sure did. I got warned a few times for some of the ones I was posting. We had some pretty good trolls back in the day too, ie. Revolver, 2smart4u, Moral man, and countless others. Some good arguments and personal battles that got heated as well.
Exactly. Not clicking on their threads, ignoring their replies and completely bypassing them altogether, will make the average troll disappear in a matter of a few days. The only Reason Red rooster continues to stick around, is because people opt to argue with him.. I admit that I still post on his threads, but mainly to respond to the comments of other people on there, and not so much him.. Starting a thread asking a troll to monitor his behavior is like ringing the freakin' dinner bell.
Unfortunately we do still see a lot of troll-feeding here. People really can't help themselves, they just have to argue with the trolls. Not sure what it is that goes through their heads telling them that is a good idea, but they cannot stay away from the trap.
