    Of course not.

Almost every single 'unbeaten' fighter has at least one (very) controversial win on his record anyway, and the vast majority of the top fighters that had earlier losses on their record have developed far beyond that level.

It says something, but not much.

makes it easier to sell the boxer to the masses, who both

    1. crave value for money and
2.like to associate themselves with success both inclusive in the price of one admission ticket to the fight paid for by a week of personal failures at work and home.

Its a chance for viewer redemption, they associate with the zero loss. They like to buy a slice of illusionary success to make up for their real failures..

    100% it matters

Heres part of an old post below -

Look at how T Bradley is rated as a top undefeated fighter, but had he been given a loss to Pacquiao, some of the lustre would have gone and I doubt he would be given the high P4P rating. Had he been ruled unfit to continue when looking in a worse condition than Groves against Froch when fighting Provodnikov, im sure people would say he was exposed and would not be 31-0 but be 29-2 without the world title with a stoppage loss, and no undefeated record.

Do you think Bradley would have his Ring mag #3 P4P rating and be earning as well as he does had he not been given those 2 noted decisions

good point but that just shows the ring magazine is ridiculous and casual fans who DNSAB will value that 0 even though hardcore fans know what a fighters true record is.

Back when i first started watching boxing it didnt matter because everybody fought everybody so you knew at some point a fighter would have an off night.

Today with all of this instant success culture a loss is seen as the absolute failure , but this is what is killing the sport.

Big fights are not getting made because the loss is greater than it used to be.

Frazier,s victory over Ali in the first fight, when both were undefeated, holds more value than his gallant showing in the rubber match. And part of the reason why the fight was so heavily publicized was the fact that both participants had yet to lose in their pro careers.

The "0" is hardly the be-all and end-all of determining greatness. But a certain mystique can be built around it (Tyson, anyone?), and to deny its value in terms of publicizing a fight is just as egregious as placing too much emphasis upon it, imo.

Great point. There's no way that being undefeated is meaningless, especially if you're a top caliber fighter. At the same time, you don't all of a sudden become a bum just because you lose a fight.

It depends on who they fight..

And yes, I think it is impressive that Floyd is still unbeaten.

Hatton was never the same after Floyd took his 0 it doesn't matter to me as a fan but I think it can effect the fighter maybe?

    good point.

disregarding the physical effect that fight could have had on his body, i think mentally an unbeaten fighter is harder to beat.

A loss can definately affect a fighter depending on the loss. A big component of any sort of competition is confidence. A loss can negatively affect your confidence, and in turn affect the way you fight.

Lets look at Roy Jones' situation.. He was 49-1 when he lost.. No one cared that he didn't have an 0.

He also lost via DQ in a fight he was starting to take over. It was certainly a big deal when Tarver knocked him out.
