I think Larry had a lot of resentment because he felt like he never got the love or recognition coming after Ali...Made him bitter I think. But I always thought the true boxing fans knew who Larry Holmes was and what he brought to the division... Larry, never used filters when speaking ...
He made those statements about Rocky at the worst possible time. Coming right after a loss it looked like sour grapes though he wasn't really given the respect he deserved as a longtime champion. Holmes did have some resentment against the way the Marciano family conducted themselves during the lead up to the Spinks fight. Had Ali said the same thing most people would've laughed and it might've been no big deal. Larry just didn't have any charisma. Anyway I am a Larry Holmes fan. He was a helluva fighter. Huge heart.
Everything Holmes said about rocky is true. Rocky can't hold a candle to larry. Rocky is the most overrated HW after the klitshkos
At first,Larry was a tad bitter because he suffered from what was known then as 'The Ezzard Charles Syndrome' - A successor to an extremely hard act to follow. It was only in fairly recent years that he attained the popularity, and recognition, that he felt he deserved.
Larry was upset he felt he won the Spinks fight and that was not the question he probably wanted to hear at the time. Larry is a total class act and one of the nicest boxers you could ever meet.
The agenda of the interviewer was there for all to see when he couldn't even get the name of the Spink brother right. He was far more interested in trying to stoke up the row between Holmes, and Marciano's brother. The idiot.
I agree ETM. Plus in the heat of the moment after a very tough loss, he opened his mouth with no filter. He spoke from hurt and frustration. He came last year to MA> for the unveiling of the Rocky Marciano statue, and he was a class act. He also made peace with Peter and the Marciano family. And you are right about how Ali was, Homes just had a tough way of delivering a line... The way he delivered his jab, tough !!
Let's see any one of us go through that pressure cooker and come out sounding like Sir Lawrence Olivier receiving an award later. Until then, it's kind of a punk move to judge him.
I think that a bit too much gets made of the Rocky Marciano thing. He was having a really bad day, it was said in the heat of the moment, and it was a long time ago anyway. We continue to criticise him for this, while other ATGs have much more tangible criticisms that can be levelled against them.
