I've got some rather choice Corbett and Jeffries quotes that would put this mild stuff to shame. By the way, how many times does Holmes actually repeat that Rocky Marciano was a great fighter… His gripe was with the gravy training Peter Marciano and all the krackers who can't shut up about Rocky.

Holmes was a great fighter, but an *******, it was a pleasure watching Tyson blast him out in 88, with little trouble..
Holmes trash talked Cooney down, then tried to pick a fight with him outside the ring before their match, then there was the incident when he put down Marciano in front of his family..
Then when he was fighting Ray Mercer , Holmes was screaming into the camera, I'm not Tommy Morrison???:huh not sure why he had a problem with Morrison??
Then of course the much publicized street fight with Trevor Berbick.
It just seemed like Holmes was always angry..

Another thing that should be said in Holmes’s defence, is that he was on the receiving end of a lot of racially motivated attacks, and a white hope campaign that would not have looked out of place in the era of Jack Johnson.

It should not come as a shock that he occasionally lost his cool and reacted to this.

Very true. And many portrayed Holmes as being intellectually deficient which really couldnt be farther from the truth. He has proven to be very wise and a PhD in street smarts. He is nobody's fool. And while not the most physically gifted athlete, his toughness and grit are unquestionable. He is a good role model methinks.

Interesting that Ali doesnt get anywhere near as much criticism for calling Joe Louis and Joe Frazier uncle toms

People on this forum who have actually met Holmes, have described him as being friendly, and genuine.

I have to note your description of George Foreman, in this context.

I personally think that Holmes is a bit over rated on this board, and that some of the contemporary criticism of his career was justified, but he was legitimately one of the better heavyweight champions as a person.

The only time i met Holmes he was tipsy and well mannered while still keeping an edge. I would follow that man into battle.

That syndrome happen well before Charles though.

Gene Tunney, Jim Corbett to a extent, and Marvin Hart/Tommy Burns all suffer from it.

Dempsey's name made the million $ gates, not Tunney as his title defense vs Heenley show.

Great person, very friendly. Saw him in the late 1990's. It was great to meet him. Even got a sign glove.

I think it was the first time I saw it although i heard about the remarks. The Marciano family showed a lot of class and Holmes did not but it may have been the heat of the moment. Holmes talks about racial and it was he who made the racial remark that White fighters could not beat black fighters, well Holmes has a short memory because Nick Wells who KO'd him 2X at his amateur peak and Duane Bobick were indeed white guys last time I checked.

Holmes later went on to speak highly of Marciano as a fighter and I can understand him being conscious of the fact that the Marciano family was rooting against him breaking Rocky's record.

Class is not something that people can learn and Larry's claim of calling people racist is a case of the pot calling the kettle black

    Here is what happened ..

In the ring, after the decision, Holmes was a gracious loser. He praised Michael and wished him luck. After , during the post fight press conference, Larry got up to speak and he was openly heckled by a group of Marciano fans who had been flown to the event because of the significance and who were busting his balls openly. AT that point Larry uttered the infamous words. He should not have done it but he was openly provoked at a very vulnerable moment. Compound this by the fact that this wa the 1980's and race relations were not where they are now in the US .. there was progress for sure but it was a far cry from today, basically the pre-Jordan era .. when bad black Larry Holmes said this about the sainted Marciano, it ripped across the world .. if Ali had said it it would have rolled but Larry lacked that grace that Ali had even when serious and it bit him hard for a while .. now it's a footnote at most ..

What a half baked loaf of surgically selected nonsense .. nice to skip over the entire Cooney fight and all the indignities Larry was forced to endure. You really are the biggest revisionist on this forum because while many here are simply clueless you openly choose to omit and write this stuff.. You say you lived thru the era but that is what you say about Holmes and his career ? You're quite a character. :rofl

no you just weren't born but are making a judgement but that suits you because your are selective when it comes to the factual and are the King of revisionists ...did you not listen to the video and hear Larry make that racial statement but poor Larry....I would love to see what you would say if the Klitschko's said right now that no Black man can win as long as the white men keep fighting the way they are....no I already know what you would say

It was Larry that opened up the racial stuff and he showed no class with Cooney (who was too Gentlemanly when Larry jumped in his face) Holmes had no class and a lack of brains while his mouth and anger got him in trouble, he deserved it. I can see him being wary and angry with white people because he was beaten badly by White Nick Wells and Bobick at the height of his amateur career. The Marciano family showed the class that Larry lacked.

Your the funny guy I always see your crying for the poor black guy but when the shoe is on the other foot the black guy gets a green light and can do no wrong.

I am against bigotry of any kind but you are selective and slip on those rose colored glasses when it suits you....you are transparent he grant

So you are obviously quite happy with that highly over rated lump of **** BORENARD Hopkins saying " No white boy will ever beat me......................................blah, blah, fvcking blah, pig**** then?

Or how about all those white super heroes from the early part of the last century who simply refused to fight black guys, claiming they were naturally inferior, and therefore unworthy of a title shot?
