Turpin-Robinson Lewis-Holyfield Honeyghan-Curry All easily more meaningful wins than Calzaghe-Lacy. Ray Robinson= GOAT Evander Holyfield= ATG Donald Curry= undefeated P4Per at the time. Probably should be in the IBHOF, definitely more deserving than some of the fighters already in. Jeff Lacy= Jeff Lacy
Funny how Calzaghe fans are also huge Lacy fans, since they are only one hyping LAcy today he was overhyped fighter which actually doesnt make this win great at all and doesnt make Lacy good, decent win nothing more... Honestly want to know what makes this fight GREAT since LAcy will not even be HOF fighter...
as with 46-0, all it means is he fought garbage competition and/or got gift decisions just like Calzaghe got gifted vs Hopkins
8 years ago when America sent over their "next big thing", only for him to receive an absolute fisting from Calzaghe... as well as a beating in the ring, before Calzaghe sought out two of America's very best and gave them a schooling they'll never forget. 46-0. No blue-print. TBE. :happy:hi:
An All Time Great wouldn't have had to rely on corrupt refs and judges to beat Robin Reid. Added to the undeniable highway robbery of the Ottke/Ried fight there is the fact that many people believed Brewer, Mitchell and Tate were also the victims of hometown decisions going Ottke's way. Years after his retirement Ottke's name remains mud, and he is not rated amungst the top fighters in the divisions history because of the controversial nature of so many of his biggest wins.
The fact that it was the most one-sided dominant performace in a fight between two world champion in the history the division makes it a significant fight, and the fact that Calzaghe in spectacular fashion proved wrong all his critics who were claiming he was either never any good in the first place or was washed up made it his landmark fight. How good Lacy actually was doesn't change how he was seen at the time and how much of a shock it was Calzaghe utterly dominated him.
I remember it well, was very nervous, kept thinking Joe will be winning the fight until he walks onto a huge right or left look, but he took him to school instead..
It was a sensational win for Calzaghe, it really turned his career around having been ranked under Ottke for most of his reign due to his inability or unwillingness to face better opposition. But he finally did what he had refused to do previously and take a pay cut to secure a big fight. Shame he couldn't have done it years earlier. Lacy was the favourite on both sides of the atlantic at the time, though personally I didn't see it that way. I was predicting a TKO for Calzaghe by the 7th round. Lacy showed he had a good chin that night because Calzaghe dominated and put on a beautiful beat down for 12 painful rounds.
That was a Roy Jones Jr in his prime. It was because of Super Joe that Roy suffered the severe brain damage we associate with RJJ today. It was a spectactical display of skills, heart and determination from the fighting pride of Newbridge, Wales.
8 years ago and some yanks are still butt hurt over it, yanks can't bear it when a brit from a small island beats one of their own. they hate joe so much cos they couldn't beat him, go sort your heavyweights out and your Olympic programme so your not turning out 3 time Olympic losers like rau'shee ******,
