When I watched it at the time I didn't know too much about Groves other than he had gone life and death with Kenny Anderson in a quite unimpressive manner.

DeGale was obviously Olympic Gold medalist and favourite to win.

When I watched it, it felt a draw - which 1 judge had it as, the other two to Groves by a razor thin one point margin. Groves a bloody mess at the end.

Having seen how their subsequent fights have played out, looking back what surprises me are the two following points:

    - Groves didn't once hurt DeGale, yet we now know Groves has excellent power - does this mean DeGale's chin is actually a lot better than we thought??

    - DeGale who has since been shown to be a light puncher, buzzed Groves up quite badly twice I think. Does this mean Groves' chin is not stellar?

Always interesting to review fights with the benefit of hindsight!

EDIT: I accidentally posted this in the General, so apologies for the duplication!

Groves' power has developed for me. It's become increasingly obvious and the fact is that DeGale does not have the sort of chin Carl does and George rocked him time and again.

Both were much younger when this fight too place, I think Groves has improved massively whilst DeGale has stagnated.

Errrmmm i think its worth remembering george was like 21/22 and degale was 24/25

also groves has significantly approved since then whilst degale has seemingly stagnated.

I had Groves winning by a point. It was close, but Groves did more early on and deserved it IMO.

Every decision made by Groves upto and since has been done to make him a better fighter with better opportunities,Degale hasn't followed that path

    I thought Groves won it.

Neither really hurt each other. Groves was cut because of a head clash and I do remember the commentators piping up late on (think it was the 10th or 11th) saying Groves was hurt because he stumbled but if you watch it back.. they clash heads and Degale catches his foot which causes the stumble.

Given the hype, it wasn't actually a great fight. Groves boxed on the back foot, threw more, landed more and took near on all of the early rounds. Degale looked like he had run out of ideas at times.

Adam Booth had a game plan for Groves and Groves executed it well enough to win the fight. I think DeGale was surprised by the tactics and didn't react accordingly.

What was obvious for me on watching it a second time was that every time Groves needed to step up and take a round he did so.

However... there is a big question mark over Groves' stamina and chin.

Groves annihilates degale if they fight again, different class in terms off skill and power.

I thought Degale won the fight personally but it was very close so no problem with it going the way it did but I agree Groves has surpassed degale now.

TBF groves threw barely any power punches, the fight was a glorified AM fight with lots of fencing and posturing neither combatant let there hands go. Groves shocked everyone fighting and beating ( I had degale winning) of the back foot, an ability he had not shown in his previous fights.

How would groves fight? That is the question.
