Agreed, Linares was putting on a clinic through several rounds.

People for a long time afterward called it a "FOTY candidate" but that never made sense to me. Maybe to a purist the bulk of it was nice to watch but it was by no means action-packed. I think people's memories just got very selective and they remembered the dramatic turnaround and violent ending and their minds just filled in the blanks until they convinced themselves it was fun throughout. It wasn't. It was shaping up to be a semi-boring and fairly easy shutout for Linares.

Linares is putting his head down as Arakawa slaps down at him with both hands. Linares gains handholds on Arakawa's sides, clutching and releasing and then firing straight combos. Uppercuts inside by Linares before squeaking outside. Constant movement by Linares.

10-9 Linares

Round 8

Linares is hopping around, throwing lead upper-hook lefts as he skips on the outside with Arakawa whirling to face up to him and flailing ineffectively with power-slap flurries. Linares is shouldering into Arakawa when he slows or runs out of real estate, buying himself a moment to spring off and get some combos working. Arakawa walks through a 1-2 and begins to slap away on the sides of the head and biceps of Linares, who leans forward shelling up.
