Interesting you mention sonny liston here.

Im a huge fan of tyson but iv read in a book about tyson how when he used to study tape of old fighters religiously when younger(an often forgotten fact how young tyson was such a student of the art)he swears down stylistically he would never have been able to beat liston yet anyone else including ali he himself feels could off dealt with.

Not saying thats true or untrue just interesting.

Tyson's hero was always Jack Dempsey. Like Dempsey, Tyson had a great chin and a great punch and a very menacing ring persona that intimidated opponents. Jack, though had much more heart than Mike. Jack fought in coal miner tournaments, winner gets eggs and maybe some bacon, loser gets a busted face and back to the coal mines to work with little breakfast. Tyson was a spoiled brat compared to Jack and would have been spanked if the two ever met. Also, Tyson is 5 foot 11 inches and Dempsey was just under 6 foot 2 so prime Jack could have worked Tyson from distance if he wanted to. Tyson is overrated as fans never saw such a killer enter the ring like him. They were all born far too late to see the savagery that was prime Dempsey.

Yep Jack Dempsey was so tough that he avoided fighting all black fighters. So tough because he fought in a era where most guys weren't really skilled. I believe 30 or so of Dempsey's 54 wins came against guys with losing records. Talking about hand picked opponents.

Skier47 unless you are over 100 year never seen Dempsey box either. But as I said in another thread because you want to believe he is great then he is great in your eyes.

Jack was such a coward he drew the color line. Pretty much sums up his career huh? Tyson was overrated but Dempsey is more so.

Dempsey was 6'1 and weighed under 200 pounds most of his career. Few of Dempey's opponents were modern sized heavyweights. Sure Jess Willard was but who did he beat? A washed up 190 pound Jack Johnson?

Actually, I'm closer to a 100 than I care to admit. Dempsey was Tyson's hero. He has talked about this since the age of nineteen. Dempsey's prolific writings on boxing tactics and strategy are well documented and many of his fights are recorded for all to see. Jack Dempsey had a tremendous punch and a very tough beard as did Tyson. But Jack was raised in brutal poverty and literally had to fight to eat. He had more heart than Mike and I think that would have been the difference had the two ever fought.

    Tyson had the Quasimodo complex.

He knew people only loved him because he was a good boxer.
Outside the ring, he was a pariah, and the fear of losing haunted him during all his career.

It's such a sad waste of talent. His speed as a young man was just unbelievable - absolutely nothing like we see from heavyweights.

That's why intelligent boxing discussion happens to look at *RECORDS* -- verifiable facts. Not 'Oh but he wasn't in his prime when he lost' bull**** that is subject to interpretation and opinion.

Tyson's income from boxing and mainstream popularity are 10x bigger than his record. Tysons record is good, but nothing to write home about when compared to the sport's top 25 athletes in history.

prime lennox lewis beats a prime tyson comfortably.

The myth of the invincibility of mike tyson is laughable.

1988 mike tyson would win 9 times out of 10 against the elite heavyweights of all time.

Tyson was only 30 or so when he fought Lewis and Lewis is the same age so if Tyson was washed up then so was Lewis. Holyfield was washed up too and still knocked out Tyson. Danny Williams and Kevin McBride were bums. Foreman fought till he was 50 and bums weren't knocking him out.

I've never understood why people say this. To me, "struggling" is a split decision, a disputed, controversial decision, being well behind on the scorecards and getting a breakthrough stoppage. None of that applies to Tyson's fights against Green, Tillis, or Tucker. He wiped them out on the cards. None of those were close fights. You know someone is great when failure to knock an opponent out constitutes "struggling".

IMO, Tyson beats any heavyweight pre-Ali. They were too small and simply lacked the sheer physical capabilities to match up with a mutant freak like Tyson. From the Ali era to today, however, I think there are several who could take him. I would very comfortably bet money on Ali, Lewis, or Vitali over Tyson. I also think Wlad could keep him away long enough to break him down, though I wouldn't bet money on it. I'm probably alone on this, but I also think Bowe, on his best night, takes out Tyson too.

I'm torn on Holmes and Holyfield. I'm leaning Tyson for Holmes, but there is a part of me that thinks Holy field would have always had his number. I think he's the Marquez to Tyson's Pacquiao.

    You're not alone.
The Bowe that won the title vs Holyfield had a great punch, an excellent chin and could fight inside.

And a mean streak to boot.

    50-50 fight.

not a chance,wk would be gone in quick time,he would cling on for dear life until he was eventually caught, vitali would stand a much better chance but he would still lose
