If you were in charge of boxing, which would you enforce? was thinking of this looking at the tell of the tape last night in canelo vs angulo. both guys were light heavys for a jr middleweight fight. that's ridiculous. i'd like to see how fighters would adjust today to day of weigh-ins.
I believe that any official weigh-in should take place on the day of a fight. Having fighters weigh in the day before fights does much to defeat the purpose of having weight classes. - Chuck Johnston
I understand why they weigh in the day before but like everyone I also understand how in practice it does not work. If I ran boxing I would make any fighter more than 8lb on the day of the fight wear 12oz gloves and let the lighter man wear 8oz. for Heavyweights I would make any fat ******* wear an extra 2oz more padding in his gloves for every 10lb he outweighed his opponent. Believe me, all this cheating the scales would stop overnight if any fighter thought his opponent would be allowed to hit him with smaller gloves than he had. At the end of the day the smaller man should not be robbed of his chance of a KO. Why should the smaller man be handicapped?
I'm the same about it, i think it was brought in with good intentions but now some fighters are taking advantage of it. It might be good for them at fight time but I can't imagine it would be good for them in the long run (ie full welterweights getting down to lightweight for the weigh in). The other factor is that I can see a fighter being badly hurt by someone who is just going to outweigh him by too much on the night. If you can't do the weight on the morning of the fight and be strong on the night you're fighting in the wrong division, simple as that
Exactly. It would soon stop if the man closest to the official weight by a more acceptable degree was allowed to wear smaller gloves on the night than the bigger man. Weight classes are supposed to be there for men of equal weight to fight each other. Let them cheat just handicap them.
You are so right! On one occasion making weight I had to cut off water and food for twenty four hours before the weigh in and had to jump rope in a sweat suit for hours the day before, my dad and brother had to carry me too and from it. I couldn't have fought a skeeter.
I am reading this and being reminded of a quote from the oft-quoted Chuck Johnston: "I believe that any official weigh-in should take place on the day of a fight. Having fighters weigh in the day before fights does much to defeat the purpose of having weight classes." But, ultimately, I don't think much of it because everyone's allowed to do it and that means almost every fighter is forced to cut weight or fight bigger men. But there's approaching 20 weight classes, so if they can't find a comfortable solution within that structure, they should probably take up golf.
