Youve got to take into consideration the Stevenson fight. After getting koed like that it was obv he was going to be a little cautious and reserved in his comeback fight
It's one of those where he's trying to come across as if he's joking but really he's being serious. He was really passive aggressive towards Kugan. It's a character flaw which stems from years of perceived under-appreciation and bitterness.
